Sleepy Hollow Season 3 Episode 11: The Kindred returns and is looking for love.

Before I begin writing this review of tonight’s episode of Sleepy Hollow, I would just like to say that this particular review is going to be on the ranty side for the most part. So I apologize profusely in advance for those who find ranty things irksome. Now, let’s get to the review, shall we?

I have watched Sleepy Hollow since it first premiered and though I didn’t start covering it till season 2, I thought that it was a pretty good show to add to my primetime watch list. After some great and decent episodes later, I’m starting to think that the writers are beginning to run out of ideas when I watched tonight’s episode. Yes, they thrown in a few dramatic twists in it like they always have for good measure, but this episode, in my opinion, is like they’re not even trying.

I mean, bringing the Kindred back from when it first appeared in season 1 to do battle with the Headless Horseman was a good idea, given that the creature can wreak havoc in Sleepy Hollow after seeing him chop innocent couples to pieces and summoning a horse with a snap of his fingers, but to have him feel human emotions to the point where he goes down the path that Frankenstein’s monster took and went in search for a bride just makes me roll my eyes a little bit. It’s like a Sleepy Hollow fan-fiction piece dedicated to the Frankenstein novella by Mary Shelley.

There were scenes in this episode that made my heart beat faster, as suspenseful dramatic scenes tend to do, like the part where Jenny and Joe snuck into an opera house in New Jersey to steal Benjamin Franklin’s glass harmonica. I was sure that they would get caught by the security guard but thankfully they didn’t and made it back to the archives with the fragile instrument. I also applaud Joe for trying to convince Jenny to reconcile with Papa Mills, but like Jenny said, she’s not going to have a latte with her deadbeat Dad. Though I hope that someday, the Mills family will try to work things out for the better.

Another heart-racing scene was when Zoe confronted Ichabod about not contacting her for quite some time just as the latter was about to head back into the tunnels with the sheet music for the Kindred’s lullaby. I was like, “Ichabod, just tell her that you’re sorry for neglecting her and head back before it’s too late!” but it ended up being too late when the Kindred came out of the tunnels and grabbed Zoe. I was shocked to hear the Kindred speak, warning Ichabod not to follow him to rescue Zoe or else he will kill the woman. The guy didn’t have a voice except deep primal growling sounds ever since it was first summoned and now suddenly he can speak and make a collage of a woman’s face with magazine clippings? What in the world is happening here?

I felt sorry for Pandora again when she attempted to coax her undead hubby to restore her powers so that she can serve him in his conquest and vice versa. The Hidden One seems to have no intention of restoring his wife’s powers as he didn’t answer her inquiry on the matter as his face had a “that’s the price you pay for screwing up” expression on it. My heart also went out to the Kindred, who was about to go off on his happily ever after with his female counterpart, got blown to bits by the Hidden One along with the creature’s lady love. Tragic.

The hour ended with Abbie and Ichabod playing a game of chess. Ichabod didn’t seem to be concentrating as Abbie is capturing his pieces left and right. It’s sad to see Ichabod lose Zoe after all that’s happened, but there’s hope that our resident man out of time will be able to find the one that he’s meant to be with aside from his late wife Katrina. I was intrigued to find out that Agent Reynolds fell in love with Abbie when they were at Quantico. Perhaps there’s a possibility that this potential romance could be rekindled now that Abbie is coming back to work at the FBI. Though the strange symbol that Abbie drew in her blood subconsciously makes me think that there’s something sinister in store for Abbie. Let’s hope the next episode will fare better than this one.
