Scorpion Season 2 Episode 12 Review: “Dam Breakthrough”

Scorpion

Christmas is in the air for Team Scorpion as Paige decorates the garage with holiday decorations. There’s even a beautiful, decorative, and delicious looking gingerbread house waiting to be completed while Walter busies himself with creating non-melting snow with Toby and Happy’s help, testing out a possible solution for ski resorts in this week’s episode of Scorpion.

The festivities were then put on hold when a man from Augustine DWP, Mr. Woodbury, contacted Team Scorpion with a near dire situation at the Augustine Power Station on Mount Baldy as a fifty foot pine tree got uprooted due to the El Nino, which brought quite a lot of rain to the Augustine area that also caused flash floods to occur on the roads that lead up to the power station.

The team then drove up to the power station to put up a makeshift roof out of tarp, using a giant gorilla balloon to hold everything up. While on the way, Toby found out that Walter never got the chance to spread Megan’s ashes and stored said ashes in a coffee can in the glove compartment of his car. That, combined with Walter talking to himself makes me think that his mental dam is about to break. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. We can’t have a crazy Walter.

I thoroughly enjoyed the scene where Toby, Agent Gallo and Happy sang the first three lines to the Christmas song “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” after inhaling the helium gas used to fill up the blue gorilla balloon. I was laughing so hard, I could barely breathe. I don’t know what came over Toby to inhale the helium, but I give him props for the humorous display and it was nice to see Happy smile for once. Bringing things back to the mission, after running a computer diagnostic at the Power Station, everything was back online until a mudslide occurred, sending piles of dirt and tree debris into the reservoir. As Happy would say, not good.

Walter then came up with a solution to freeze the water directly behind the crack on the dam face to stop the water from flowing out, thus giving the team enough time to repair the crack with quick-drying concrete. Agent Gallo volunteered to be lowered down via a harness with the sprayer filled with the concrete. To say I was watching at the edge of my seat is an understatement when Agent Gallo had to climb his way back up using the leftover concrete to create a ladder as the rope gave way.

Just when everyone was breathing a sigh of relief after getting a semi heart-attack watching Agent Gallo climb back up, another problem arose. The output pipe in the reservoir was blocked by the debris from the mudslide, causing the dam to fill up with more water. Toby came up with a plan to perform a colonoscopy and Happy built a colonoscope with spinning blades on the end to cut through the tree branches and pine needles. I became really nervous when Agent Gallo told Toby to take better care of his car when taking out the car battery and, seconds later, the shrink scratched the Homeland agent’s SUV with the battery. Oy vey, Toby, oy vey.

I totally agreed with Walter when he told Paige to get Ralph on the phone so that he could tell the boy to hack into the emergency alert system to warn the people of Augustine and to tell them to turn off all the Christmas lights and appliances instead of calling the police as it would take half an hour to convince them that they’re not crackpots making a prank phone call.

At least, Paige was the one who told Ralph what to type before sending the message out instead of Walter who wanted the boy to be as blunt as possible. An emotional, calming message will let people know not to panic during chaotic situations so yay for Paige. Happy thought wrong when she thought that it was Walter who dictated the words used in the alert. She should’ve figured out that it was Paige as it appealed to emotions rather than logic.

After creating a tsunami bomb that diverted some of the water from the Augustine reservoir to another reservoir, all was well as the people living in the city down below were safe from dying a watery death. Back at the garage, Walter received a message from Margaret Crosier, a representative of the Karman Prize committee, informing him that he had won the fifteen million dollar grant for the work he did on the rocket. The genius then finally broke down as he came to terms with Megan’s death after finding Ferret Bueller when the rodent was missing from its cage. It’s evident that her death has hit Walter hard, but at least, he is surrounded by people who care about him and will help him move on emotionally.

It was nice and sentimental of Walter to place his late sister’s ashes onto the rocket at the end of the episode. He even told Sylvester that he can call him his brother since the human calculator married his sister. Shame that Walter won’t be able to get the money since he launched the rocket before showing it to the Karman Prize committee, but like Walter said, it’s Megan’s rocket, not his as he only wanted to win the money to help with finding a cure for MS. It was also great to see that both Quintis and Waige are back on track after Toby kissed Happy and Walter held hands with Paige as Team Scorpion watched the rocket fly out into space, taking Megan with it, so she can rest among the stars. A heartwarming end to an emotional day.
