“Louie” took a turn into the realm of silly this week with the first vignette, “So Old.” In it, Louis meets a young woman after his set who is turned on by his advanced age. When he explains how old he is during sex, it made me think of the things I’ve experienced that will seem ridiculous. Print media, cell phones without cameras and dial-up internet will just seem like stone age technology by the time I’m in my 40s.
The second vignette is a return to form for the show as Louis embarrasses himself at a PTA meeting.
“I mean, school sucks … right?”
After the meeting, he meets a woman whose son shares a class with one of his daughters and they set up a play date. They enjoy dinner and discuss parenting as their kids play. This scene reminded me of last weeks episode where Louis and Nick bond in the emergency room. These bittersweet moments are quickly becoming the hallmark of the series.
The highlight of the episode, however, is Louis’ therapist. This guy is clearly unfit to be anybody’s shrink. He constantly is putting words in Louis’ mouth and generally making him (and me) very uncomfortable.
This week’s episode had the most laughs of the series thus far, but it still didn’t lose its sincere edge.
