It’s Date Night for Mr. and Mrs. Crane in this week’s episode of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod and Katrina are invited to a special event at Sleepy Hollow’s Historical Society where the group has acquired objects that once belonged to John Adams. I was amused when Ichabod complained about modern dress, asking how one can be dressed in both business and casual clothing. The event was successful, aside from the heated whispers of curator Miller berating art restorer Grant Hollister about the cracks in the frame of the painting, then it took a turn for the worst when Grant was suddenly murdered, his body hanging by the heel on the chandelier, like the Hanged Man seen on tarot cards, with blood dripping onto the wooden floor.
Following the art restorer’s mysterious death, Ichabod and Katrina are reminded of Mrs. Abigail Adams (guest star Michelle Trachtenberg), a dear friend of Katrina’s, who had been investigating these strange deaths where the killer had a habit of finishing his victims off by slicing them across the carotid artery on their neck. This specific detail led Mrs. Adams to believe that the killer might have been a surgeon, but this theory went out the window when Ichabod and Katrina examined the painting and noticed that the artist inside of it has a knife covered in fresh blood in his hand.
While Mr. and Mrs. Crane are solving the murder of Grant Hollister, a mysterious visitor comes into the precinct, stating that he is turning himself in. The mystery man is later revealed to be none other than former Captain Frank Irving (#calledit), which shocked Abbie because the good Captain is supposed to be dead after being killed in the battle against Moloch. Irving’s sudden reappearance makes Abbie very suspicious because the last time that a fellow law enforcer came back from the dead, he ended up as Moloch’s henchman.
Abbie then told Jenny about Irving coming back from the dead, and though Jenny is happy that their friend is back, Abbie still doesn’t quite trust him, which then led to the younger Miss Mills retrieving the supernatural weapon of the night by digging out special bullets from a dead body, given that our Mr. Hawley is conveniently out of town. Jenny was almost strangled in the process of extracting said bullets from the dead body, as Hawley forgot to mention that one of the bullets should be left in the body or else it could come back to life. Thanks for the reminder, Hawley! (#Sarcasm)
Back at the Society, Ichabod and Katrina are still trying to figure out who killed Grant and Mrs. Crane is having flashbacks to when she was visiting Mrs. Adams, which led to the discovery of the murderer’s identity. The killer turned out to be fictional painter James Colby, who disappeared without a trace in 1782. Katrina then discovered a journal hidden within Abigail Adam’s desk and found that the second First Lady did, in fact, apprehend Colby by letting herself be captured. She also had Reverend Knapp trap Colby within the unfinished painting, thus ending Colby’s reign of terror. Now Colby’s spirit is wreaking havoc in Sleepy Hollow, collecting fresh blood from living victims so that he can complete the ritual that will allow him to be separated from the painting that he had been imprisoned in.
Mr. and Mrs. Crane then pulled a Mary Poppins when they transported themselves into the painting in order to stop the killer painter from killing again and to rescue Miller from becoming Colby’s latest victim. Ichabod had wanted to go in himself and be the hero but Katrina stepped in by touching the painting as well, saying that they should not be separated anymore and that they are going to go on this rescue mission together. Sounds like the Cranes are well on their way to rekindling their marriage. After wandering through Colby’s childhood home, Ichabod and Katrina finally locate the abducted art curator, who is hanging upside down by the heel, blood dripping onto the floor just like what happened to Grant. Katrina then cast a spell to transport her, Ichabod, and Miller out of the painting before Colby could finish Miller off.
When Colby himself followed after the rescue mission, looking every inch like a bloody zombie, ready to take his revenge, Abigail Mills showed up in the nick of time with a handgun filled with the bullets that Jenny had retrieved. Colby is finally neutralized when Ichabod told Abbie to fire the bullets into the painting. Miller will survive, and Ichabod and Katrina will live to go on more date nights.
I loved the scene where Katrina distracted the Society member by kissing Ichabod and seeing Ichabod at a loss for words after the earth-shattering kiss from his wife. However, there’s one thing that irks me about Katrina. I wished that she would’ve been more concerned during that scene where Ichabod was being strangled by Colby as the bloody killer painter emerged from the painting. I mean, her husband is being choked to death; she should be either screaming her head off or cast a spell of some sort to get Colby to release Ichabod from his bloody grasp. I would have also preferred to see Ichabod and Katrina solve the case and defeat Colby on their own but I digress.
The episode ended on what seemed to be an inconclusive note when Sheriff Reyes tells Abbie that the District Attorney has called, saying that there’s probable evidence that will set Frank Irving free. Does this mean that Henry/Jeremy’s coming back to Sleepy Hollow? What is his purpose this time? Is he going to side with evil or good? Guess we will have to wait and see what the answers are in next week’s episode. I suppose that Sleepy Hollow is trying to head off in the right direction in terms of plot; but perhaps they should speed up the process a little and add a bit more depth into Ichabod and Katrina’s story as well as the plot in general so the element of mystery will remain intact.
