After eight outstanding episodes of the new CW superhero drama The Flash, the show took it to a whole new level as Barry Allen finally faced his mom’s murderer, the Reverse-Flash!
The Flash gave us a lot of progression in several storylines in its winter finale that were both deep and compelling to follow. One of them was without doubt the continuation of Ronnie Raymond, one half of Firestorm as Caitlin discovers that her fiancé is in fact alive. I will comment on the fact that I thought Caitlin would be a bit more shocked to see Ronnie. There were several times where she was awfully calm, but maybe she was just in denial that the person she saw in front of her wasn’t him or just someone from the comics.
There has been some speculation whether or not Ronnie has amnesia as he says several times to Caitlin that he isn’t Ronnie. I think the person we saw this week was in fact Professor Stein (who will be played by Victor Garber) and when he said “Firestorm”, I don’t think he meant that his name was Firestorm, but he was hinting at the project F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. It remains to be seen what the case is, but it was still awesome to see Amell in action as the flaming hero in the episode.
“The Man in the Yellow Suit” also continued to flesh out the relationship between Iris and Barry as he finally tells her the truth about that he has been in love with her for years. As someone who has been following their relationship in various Flash comics for the past year, it was heartbreaking to see how it all went down. They have crazy good chemistry so it just breaks me to see them having this awkwardness between them. But at least he finally told her that he loves her.
I have been dying to see Reverse-Flash in live-action for a while now and this week’s episode did not disappoint in bringing one of The Flash’s demonic villains to life. I’m still somewhat iffy with the costume as it’s based on the New 52 version of Reverse-Flash, but overall I loved it and it looked great in motion. It’s still beyond me how big the show’s budget is because during the speed battle scenes through the city, at the arena and more: they looked absolutely like movie quality. It’s hard to say which one of the fights was the most impressive one because they were so good for so many reasons.
The scene where they trap Reverse-Flash inside the force field is something that I had to study so hard because both Eddie and Harrison, two people that fans have speculated could be the Reverse-Flash, were there. It was impossible to tell because of the voice and the fact that he was vibrating in order to conceal his identity. It was creepy though and that’s what Reverse-Flash was supposed to be. However the minute he managed to get Harrison and starting throwing him around and attacking him was one of the most brutal scenes of the show so far. So who is this lunatic?
Judging from the last scene, a lot of people think it’s safe to assume that Harrison Wells is absolutely the Reverse-Flash. Do you think they would just reveal it like that and that easy? There is definitely more than meets the eyes here because yes, he has a Flash ring that is connected to the suit and yes he was able to do the voice as well. The only thing that still is a head scratcher is if that was Harrison, was it a version from the future or how did it actually work? Only time will tell: but overall this was a fantastic way to go out on as a winter finale and it’s definitely one of the best mid-season finales of the current TV season. Now, if January 20 would do us a favor and show up in a flash, that would be great.
The Flash will return with brand new episodes, starting with episode 10 “Revenge of the Rogues” on Tuesday January 20, 8/7c on The CW.
