The 100 Season 2 Episode 7 Review: “Long Into an Abyss”

The 100 2.07

The 100 didn’t make it into my top 10 list for no reason. The show has gotten better with each and every episode, and shows no signs of slowing down. Just when I think “maybe they’ve played all their cards” I am proved wrong every single time. The seventh installment of the second season was no exception.

This week, Abbie listens to Jaha’s warnings, but she does not yet relinquish her power as chancellor. Bellamy, Octavia and Clarke work to save Lincoln, Finn reunites with his enemy, and plots and secret motives abound within Mt. Weather. If you haven’t seen the episode, I would suggest you not read ahead. Spoilers abound.

First of all, I KNEW that Lincoln would be rescued from Reaperdom. I don’t think Ricky Whittle would’ve made the opening credits without some continued life insurance. I mean, I definitely didn’t expect him to be “healed” so quickly, and there will certainly be more mental and physical consequences for the character. I wasn’t expecting the direction it went, but I’m pleased with it nonetheless. I mean don’t get me wrong, I was worried there for a second, but I was pretty convinced he’d pull through.

Man, Octavia has been through a lot, hasn’t she? I’m thrilled that her character has become so interesting, but it’s taken a LOT to get her there. She went from a little kid that Bellamy had to protect, kissing boys behind her big brother’s back, to becoming a warrior and dealing with her true love’s trip to Reaperdom and back (I hope you’ll find my use of the made up word “Reaperdom” acceptable). Marie Avgeropoulos is a fantastic actress, and when I started this show I had no idea how much she’d grow.

I”m really impressed with the role that Jasper and Monty have taken on in the battle between good and evil. The 100 has done a really good job of taken characters I didn’t like, or had written off as “grounder fodder”, like these two, Octavia, Murphy, etc., and turned them into really interesting characters. The “heist” scene when Jasper and Monty steal the schematics for Mt. Weather was a really, REALLY good scene, and perhaps the best work that Christopher Larkin and Devin Bostick have done on this show. They’re talented guys, but they really stepped it up a notch here.

Best of all, is the story between the grounders, the sky people and the mountain men. Every week a new development tosses loyalties in a different direction. Last week’s story with the grounders pitting Jaha versus Kane was extremely compelling. This week, things got even more complicated. Lincoln (the traitor) was saved by Clarke and her mom, and they used that to negotiate a truce to gang up on the mountain men. But (and I saw this one coming, let me tell you) the cost of a truce with the grounders is Finn. There are a couple of things that made this story the best part of the episode, and perhaps the season so far. One (big one) was Alycia Debnam-Carey (Lexa, the Commander). After last week’s strong performance, I knew that this actress was going to have something big to add to the show. She has proved that instinct to be true in every way. She commands my attention in every scene. She’s got this strength to her character that just radiates from her in every scene she does. Perhaps my favorite scene in the series thus far was the standoff in the drop ship. Octavia was weeping over Lincoln, and Ty Olsson’s healer was trapped in the middle with them as Bellamy, Clarke and Abbie prepared for a miniscule war inside the ship. Tensions were running EXTREMELY high, but Abbie dissolved it in a matter of seconds. I really thought there was about to be a bloodbath.

I just want to take a moment to give Eliza Taylor and Paige Turco some credit. I feel like I rarely talk about them. They both play such a huge role in the show that I often take them for granted. Eliza Taylor is one special leading lady. There’s just something about her that I don’t see in any other TV leading ladies. She’s got an aura, a strength that she brings to the role of Clarke, and she just nails it every single time. Paige Turco is the same. She’s always been a good Abbie, but she REALLY stepped it up a notch in the last few. Abbie on the ground is overall a much  more interesting character, but Turco has really brought us there. I can’t compliment these two actresses enough. Without them, it would be a REALLY different show.

What did you guys think of this week’s episode of The 100? Did it surprise you? Were you worried for Lincoln? Let us know!
