Lucky Ending Explained: Does the Apple TV Hit Series Set Up a Season 2?

Based on Marissa Stapley’s 2021 novel of the same title, Apple TV’s Lucky follows a young con artist dealing with the aftermath of a heist gone wrong. Anya Taylor-Joy plays the titular character, Luciana “Lucky” Armstrong, who is shaped by trauma. Smart and resourceful, Lucky is always in survival mode, driven by an unrelenting desire for freedom because of her unconventional upbringing with a con artist dad.

The seventh and final episode sheds more light on Lucky’s life, complete with unexpected twists and turns. In the end, she loses everything, including the people she loves most. However, she seems to be in the best place and having the time of her life before the credits roll. The series finale ties up all the loose ends, but viewers think the thrilling ride is not over yet. Is Lucky coming back for season 2? Let’s find out.

Lucky Ending Leaves No Loose Ends

In the penultimate episode, Lucky teams up with her dad to buy their freedom by surrendering to the FBI. Tired of running from the authorities and her ruthless in-laws, Priscilla (Annette Bening) and Wayne Whittaker (William Fichtner), Lucky devises a plan to deliver Wayne to the FBI in exchange for freedom. The finale unites the major players during the $10 million exchange at a gas terminal, with Agent Rand (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) and Agent Kershaw (Eric Lange) watching and listening from a distance.

There, Lucky drops an unexpected twist: Kershaw is Wayne’s informant, which leads to a fight between the two agents. The exchange takes a shocking turn when Wayne orders Priscilla to kill Lucky to show her allegiance, but she turns the gun on him instead. With Wayne and his men dead, Priscilla lets Lucky and John go, warning them to stay away. Lucky also gets the $10 million. “I think he’d want you to have it,” Priscilla says, referring to her deceased son and Lucky’s husband, Cary (Drew Starkey).

Lucky and John are ready to start their new life, but one major problem lingers: she doesn’t want anything to do with the money. As expected, John tries to steal the money, but Lucky is one step ahead. She later sends the crypto account and seed phrase to Agent Rand before starting a new life, free from her self-centered father and the criminal past he forced on her. Rand also visits Priscilla, promising to arrest her in due time: “I’m gonna f**king get you,” she says.

Lucky Got Her Closure and Freedom in the End

Anya Taylor-Joy as Lucky

Both the characters and viewers of the Apple TV series walk away with a sense of closure. The series finale begins with flashback scenes that reveal how Lucky grew up in the con game. Her relationship with her dad was built on how the next ploy would play out. He often risked her life as a young girl to get what he wanted and never considered her emotions or safety, and she’s clearly had enough of it.

After telling her dad she doesn’t want the money, Lucky sets a trap for him in one final con, and he falls into it. When she woke up the next morning, John was gone, along with the stuffed animal that had a recording of the seed phrase. However, Lucky swapped the seed phrase with a recording that recounts her traumatizing childhood with her dad. She concludes the recording by saying, “I love you, Dad, but you won’t see me again.”

In the final scene of the series finale, Lucky is seen on a beach, free at last. This was the kind of destination her dad always promised to take her to as a reward for a successful con, but he was never satisfied. She finally gets to her dream destination, and the warm smile on her face proves her dad’s absence doesn’t matter. As Lucky stands by the shoreline, barefoot and relishing the feeling as water circles her feet, nothing else matters. Although she ends up alone, it’s the first time in a long time she doesn’t have to look over her shoulder.

Will There Be Lucky Season 2?

The ending of Lucky doesn’t present a major cliffhanger, but it leaves room for the plot to be explored further. However, Lucky season 2 has not been greenlit, and it doesn’t seem possible at the time of writing this piece. From the start, Apple TV marketed Lucky as a limited series, with episode 7 tagged as the series finale. Also, showrunners Jonathan Tropper and Cassie Pappas confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the series is complete and they have already moved on to other projects.
