At the end of the To All the Boys trilogy, Lara Jean and Peter decided to pursue a long-distance relationship. While Peter went to Stanford, Lara Jean attended NYU, but the couple remained together.

In the third season, Katherine “Kitty” Song-Covey visits her sister in New York City, where Lara Jean admits she and Peter are having trouble. Peter is working in California while Lara Jean is pursuing her publishing career in New York.

It is implied that she and Peter are on different life trajectories and are headed for a breakup.

However, in episode 6, Lara Jean visits Kitty in Seoul and is inspired to give their long-distance relationship another chance.

During her call with Kitty in the season 3 finale, Lara Jean reveals that she and Peter are back together. She admits that they have decided to work things out, but does not dive into the specifics.

Despite the challenges, the fan-favorite couple finds their way back to each other, just as Kitty predicted earlier in the season.

Noah Centineo reprised his role as Peter Kavinsky in the show’s second season, and his character is name-dropped several times in season 3. However, Centineo does not appear in the third installment, and most of his relationship issues with Lara Jean take place off-screen.

In an interview with Variety, showrunner Valentina Garza was asked whether a cameo from Centineo was considered for the third installment.

Garza said she wanted to focus on Lara Jean’s return, allowing her and Kitty to grow together. As a result, Centineo’s return wasn’t likely a part of the plan for season 3.

Despite this, his character’s presence is felt constantly, especially during Lara Jean and Kitty’s conversations.

In one scene, Kitty uses a pen to write her senior year bucket list. It is the same pen Peter bought for Lara Jean during his trip to Seoul in season 2.

The song “About Love” from Welsh singer Marina, which bookended Peter and Lara Jean’s romance in the third film, is also heard in the season 3 finale.

Showrunner explains Lara Jean and Peter’s rough patch

In the same interview, Garza also shared that she had discussed Lara Jean and Peter’s rough patch with creator Jenny Han.

“I definitely consulted with Jenny Han about talking about this couple and making sure that she was happy with what was going on there,” she said.

The showrunner hinted that Lara Jean and Peter’s separation was never meant to be permanent. Instead, she viewed their rough patch as an opportunity for Kitty and Lara Jean “to really lean on each other.”

“This season, for Kitty, was so much about personal growth, and Lara Jean is having her own growth journey off-screen,” Garza added.

Ultimately, both sisters get their happy ending, as Kitty and Min Ho also cement their relationship in the season 3 finale.

XO, Kitty is streaming on Netflix.
