Any person that was a diehard Prince fan likely thought that Purple Rain was a fitting tribute to a career that was considered to be one of the best in the business without fail. The movie goes on to show how The Kid is at first a cocky, headstrong, and very arrogant individual that seems to think he knows everything about what he wants to do and won’t work with anyone that’s not willing to see things his way. That kind of hubris is hard to deal with however and before long everyone is avoiding him and he’s lost just about everything he could stand to lose. When the Kid finds the old man’s compositions that he knew very little if anything about he starts to compose based on his findings. Once he plays his songs again, this time with a great amount of temperance, he finds that the people and the other bands love him for it, and that he’s finally found the sound that he needed to be something great.
Despite the message that’s sent Purple Rain didn’t seem to elicit a huge response from anyone but Prince fans, but it was a big success.
10. The songs were all pre-recorded.
The bands and Prince still performed with them so as to make the movie look and sound more authentic.
9. The symbol Prince changed his name to is found in a couple of different locations.
It can be found printed on the gas tank of his bike and on an overpass that he rides under during the movie.
8. There were only three professional actors in the cast.
Everyone else was an unknown at that point or had come without a great deal of credentials to their name.
7. There was a different title to start with.
The first title was Dreams, but Prince didn’t like this since he wanted the title to have Purple in it.
6. The way the Kid treated Wendy and Lisa is true to life.
Sometimes there’s no imitation when it comes the difference between real life and acting.
5. There were three different versions of the love scene.
They did a G-rated, a PG-rated, and an R-rated. They eventually went with the R rating for the film.
4. Apollonia was married during the filming of the movie.
They did their best to keep this on the down low so that people would think that she and Prince were really a couple.
3. Morris Day had a huge drug problem during the shoot.
He had a lot of issues at that point and there were days that he had to be walked or even dragged from his trailer to the set.
2. By the time the film was released Day and Prince were not on speaking terms.
They’d been quarreling for a while over creative differences, which sounds about right since Prince seemed very particular at times.
1. Prince did most of his riding next to a camera truck.
It might not have counted as a dangerous stunt since he did ride, but a lot of actors would still use a body double.
This is one of those films you generally don’t talk about unless you’ve seen it or are a huge Prince fan.
