Hangin’ With The Homeboys is a film that’s just what it sounds like. When a group of friends decide to hang out for the evening they end up getting themselves in one jam after another in the attempt to just hang out and have a good time. By the end of the film they’ve all separated due to differences between them that are no longer capable of being worked out. This seems to be the way of many friends, particularly groups in which there are so many noticeable differences between them. Buddies are great to hang out with on occasion but if there’s nothing that deep between them, no real bond to speak of, then friendships don’t tend to last that long. Sometimes it’s better just to move on and find someone else to hang out with.
Buddies are all well and good until they start to drag you down.
10. Chris Rock was considered for the part of Willie.
Whether it was due to scheduling conflicts or the fact that the studio picked someone else it just didn’t happen.
9. John Leguizamo wanted the part of Vinny.
It was believed at that time, and probably correctly so, that Leguizamo was just too young for the part. In fact John almost didn’t get the part of Johnny but the studio insisted.
8. Willie was based on the director’s own attitude.
He would actually take offense at times if he didn’t get his way and assume that it was because he was black.
7. The film was shot in a dangerous neighborhood.
It was filmed in a part of the South Bronx that wasn’t all that safe. They had to hire extras to make sure that no one messed with the actors or the set.
6. The script was written in three days.
The director was originally going to play the part of Vinny but had to bring someone else in so as to keep the film moving.
5. The director did not have a good time making the movie.
He had his face slashed by a homeless person and couldn’t seem to stop fighting with the cast and crew about anything and everything.
4. A sequel was planned but it never happened.
The sequel was going to be titled Hangin’ With The Homegirls. Obviously it got scrapped before it could become anything.
3. A part of Tom was based off of the director as well.
The director was an aspiring actor as well so that part of himself was what Tom was based off of.
2. The director had to dial back the part of Vinny so that the character wouldn’t overshadow the rest of the cast.
Originally Vinny had more lines but this was because the director was planning on taking the part for himself. When he cast another person he had to take a lot of the lines out.
1. Johnny was made into a more innocent character for a reason.
Leguizamo wanted Johnny to be more fashionable and on the cutting edge but the director kept him innocent because Johnny was another aspect of himself.
Something tells me this director needs to distance himself just a little bit from his stories.
