There have been many Mother’s Day episodes on television since the magic technology first became common in homes. Musicals, dramas, made for TV movies, popular series and sitcoms have all taken turns at presenting special tributes for Mom. Choosing the five best of all time is risky. After all, families come in many different configurations than were presented in the early days of TV. One thing is certain, though, that the best of comedy can be very pointed or amazingly universal. Funny is, well….funny.
We all laugh in different ways and for many, many different reasons. For all the families and the mothers who raised them; this short and simple list is an attempt to gather together just a few of the best of the best.
The Carol Burnett Show – Carol Burnett and Whoopi Goldberg- Mother Daughter
There’s no need to explain the position within comedic royalty these two hold. Their skit has been a favorite for generations; with good reason. It’s touching and bust your gut funny all at the same time… the essence of the intelligent humor the show presented throughout its run. This is one of the best of the best for Mother’s Day.
The Golden Girls
For all mothers who have lived long enough, the truthful banter these gals share is pure slice of life stuff. The girls all have Mother’s Day plans, and they also reminisce about past Mother’s Days. Dorothy’s story about her mother-in-law and asking her for money is perfection. Blanche brings her mother lace handkerchiefs and offers to bring her a gentleman suitor next time; then launches into memories about a favorite beau…and that’s just the start of an episode filled with characteristic Golden Girls smiles.
Instant Mom
For a special Mother’s Day episode, favorite moms, and a daughter, from shows past joined together on the Nick at Nite show Instant Mom. Featured in the episode were Meredith Baxter from Family Ties, Tempestt Bledsoe from The Cosby Show, Jackee Harry from Sister, Sister and 227; Florence Henderson from The Brady Bunch, and Marion Ross from Happy Days.
The five women talk about what it means to be a mom. Characters Stephanie, played by Tia Mowry-Hardrict, and Maggie, played by Sheryl Lee Ralph, are obviously disappointed about their own Mother’s Day. Reflecting on life as a mother with these iconic TV moms all together in a spa, is a one of kind experience.
Four. Modern Family – Season 2, Episode 21: “Mother’s Day”
Phil and Jay take over the kitchen to prepare Mother’s Day dinner while Claire and Gloria take the kids for a hike. Mitchell tells Cameron that they are a new kind of family after Cameron accepts a bouquet at an event. Cameron is completely upset when Mitchell tells him that he is the most like a “Mom” of the two of them. What happens next is hysterically Cameron.
Five. Everybody Loves Raymond – Season 6, Episode 22: “Mother’s Day”
In this episode, the show celebrates Mother’s Day with all the gang. Marie sets the tone when she tries to get the kids to share her knock-knock jokes, but is completely shut down. She fixes things when she bakes a cake for Raymond and tries to lure him into a conversation about Deborah. Frank, who is given the entire cake, tells Raymond to stay out of it. But Marie doesn’t let it rest. She wants to have the spa Mother’s Day of her life, so Raymond covers for Deborah by telling his mother she is beautiful. In classic Raymond style, it doesn’t go well, and that’s just the beginning of how the story rolls.
Here are a few must-see extras which round out the Mother’s Day experience with family fun, sentimental moments, and favorite sitcom television:
