After a two-year absence, Steve Burton is returning to ABC’s General Hospital, reprising his iconic role as Jason Morgan. The exciting news broke during last month’s special, General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars and Storytelling.
Speaking about his return, Burton shared with ET’s Deidre Behar at the 51st Daytime Emmy Awards, It’s been amazing to come back to the show. It’s always felt like home. I love the cast, I love the crew, and life is amazing right now.
Burton initially left the show in 2021 after failing to comply with the show’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate. Addressing his departure, he expressed, The circumstance [of his GH departure] was tough and you know, that’s just the way it is.
He elaborated in an Instagram video that he had applied for medical and religious exemptions, both of which were denied.
Life Beyond General Hospital
In the wake of his GH exit, Burton found a new role on Peacock’s Days of Our Lives spinoff, Beyond Salem, portraying Harris Michaels. However, his heart firmly remained with Port Charles.
A fan favorite since 1991, Jason Morgan’s persona took a back seat as rumors of Burton’s exit swirled until confirmation came through social media. Burton mentioned to Deadline You know, [my departure] hurts… But this is also about personal freedom for me.
The Return That Excited Fans
The buzz around General Hospital reached a fever pitch when executive producer Frank Valentini teased, A former cast member is coming back. And I think that the audience will go crazy for HIM.
Speculations around familiar faces making their comeback fueled fan excitement. Could we see stars like Jonathan Jackson as Lucky Spencer or John J. York as Mac Scorpio again?
