Picture for a moment running away from a Gazorpazorp or hanging out with Abradolf Lincler (no matter how weird the guy is); For Rick and Morty fans, this is no longer just a dream. Since Justin Roiland teamed up with Tanya Watson in August of last year to create his own indie VR company, Squanchtendo, the wonderful world that lives in Roiland’s utterly insane brain has been colliding with the futuristic world of VR and captivating the minds of Rick and Morty fans across the globe.
However, although the company has been more than successful so far with the release of both Accounting VR and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, at DICE 2017 Summit this year, the co-creators announced a full-length game currently in the works and it’s no surprise that both the consumer and the tech industry are listening.
In fact, with more and more big names backing the indie VR world, the rise of the indie VR business is quickly becoming the newest and most exciting trend in VR this year. With HTC investing millions into an indie VR company known as Steel Wool, it is clear that the leading companies in the VR revolution are recognizing the impact these small startups will have on the future of indie business and signs of this impact can already be seen.
Although messing around in Rick’s lab and finally saying you’ve used a Plumbus are reason enough to take notice of the indie VR business’ impact on our society, we may begin to see more VR in our very own businesses in the process likewise. After all, with more and more companies looking for the future of employee engagement, virtual reality continues to be a major component in this endeavor. In turn, what may have started as a few huge names from our beloved nerd culture transforming their expertise into hilarious experiences in the VR world may transform into a whole new business model that allows indie creators to thrive and the average consumer to reap the benefits in the process.
No matter what the impact of Squanchtendo may have on popularizing indie VR business and the use of VR in startups and employee culture, we can still rest assured knowing that there will be many more games coming out of this awesome studio and countless VR memories to be made in the outlandish and squanchy universe that is Rick and Morty.
