We all know that the robot apocalypse is inevitable right? The advances in artificial intelligence are growing at a rate that even if we wanted to control the progress, we probably couldn’t. While there are tons of differing views on containing and working in harmony with robots and other forms of AI, one thing everyone agrees on is that the technology is and will be one of the focal parts in human life. One particular area that was explored back in the 80s with regard to this technology was law enforcement.
The movie Robocop was a huge hit and spawned a few sequels not to mention ideas about the possibilities of robotic cops. While we’re not quite at the Robocop stage, robot policemen have been popping up in China. AnBot is the first robot in China trained to carry out security checks and has started working in one of China’s busiest airports. The droid patrols the departure hall of terminal three at Shenzhen International Airport in southern China.
The 1.5 meter tall, 78 kg Anbot looks like a cross between Star Wars’ R2D2 and Doctor Who’s Daleks, with a touchscreen on top. It has enough battery power for 8 hours of operations, autonomous navigation and intelligent video analysis, and can reach speeds of 18 kmh to chase down fleeing criminals or respond to emergencies. The Anbot can also rush over to the scene if a bystander cries for help, and it can even recharge itself without human intervention
While this might be very basic, it’s just a start. Like any robot there has to be a prototype. While these guys only roll around on wheels and wouldn’t be able to actually detain or capture a criminal, remember this day folks. Robot police are already out there and it’s just a matter of time.
