It’s funny how, before this episode, Preacher made so little use of Jesse’s powers. It was like the show didn’t really want to acknowledge them. One thing’s for certain: this episode was a game-changer in many ways. Jesse’s powers are starting to have repercussions. And it’s only a matter of time before Jesse has to face the consequences. The death toll is starting to mount quite high and Jesse’s still harboring the delusion that he’s a good guy.
It’s all about one thing in “South Will Rise Again.” Tulip’s been telling that to Jesse since the very beginning. And it is lamp shaded quite a few times throughout the episode. It’s the fact that Jesse can’t really change who he is. “We are who we are.” The cowboy that we’ve seen in previous cold openings returns here. Except this time, he tries to be a good guy. He gets a good beating for his trouble and when he returns home with the medicine, he finds his wife and daughter dead. Such is the brutality that Preacher wants to convey here.
It goes the same way with Eugene. As before, he’s still facing public persecution for being the way he is. Jesse tries to change that by working his mojo. But I really wouldn’t be surprised if somewhere down the road, it came back to bite him.
Despite all of that, I really have to hand it to Arseface. His optimism in the face of a woman screaming for his blood is admirable. He at the very least, seems to have accepted who he is. However, the same can’t be said of Jesse. Jesse’s still not willing to accept his true self.
This is the time when Jesse goes on a rampage with his powers. He’s starting to use them more frequently than before and he has no idea about the consequences that follow. After he commanded Odin to serve God, he’s starting to use them for all manner of reasons. “Be patient, forgive him.” We see Jesse using his powers fearlessly and without reprimand.
The only one other than Cassidy who seems to be aware about this behavior is Donnie, and now his wife. He finds out about Odin getting worked by Jesse and he opens up to his wife about it. I’d like to see what he does here but for the moment, we have someone who’s very scared of Jesse on our hands.
After finding out about Cassidy being a vampire, Tulip and Cassidy’s relation seems to grow here. In fact, they’re actually having sex by the end of the episode. I’m not really sure where this is going but I really hope that it’s not a love-triangle because that’s exactly the last thing the show needs.
The highlight of the episode would of course, be Odin going on a killing spree. Quite literally. I don’t know how he’s serving God by killing these people but Odin needs to be dealt with. And of course, somewhere down the line the other people Jesse’s ordered will need to be dealt with too.
Fiore and DeBlanc are in this as well. They keep preparing to answer the phone only to have it stop ringing. Anyways, it looks like they’re finally getting the chance to sit down with Jesse and talk about his powers. I really think that they’re supposed to help Jesse despite being from heaven.
