Possible Theories on What Game of Thrones’ “Sad Ending” Will Be

The end isn’t coming, it’s just about here. Game of Thrones fans have been awaiting the final season now with baited breath for months, and the theories have been bubbling to the surface for just as long if not longer. Lauren Tyler of Yahoo! Entertainment reports that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Jamie Lannister himself, has stated that the final ending will be nothing short of satisfying, but also quite sad since it would seem that the showrunners have opted to end on a rather tragic note. There won’t be any spoilers since the cast and crew are keeping their lips tightly sealed, but many upon many individuals are already allowing this to tinge and taint their views as they begin to come up with ideas that will no doubt haunt them until they’re proven true or unfounded. With the ending of Game of Thrones so close at hand many of us are simply holding our breath to see just how one of the greatest shows to come along will finally end it. Some think it will end in ice, others in fire, but the truth is that it doesn’t matter, as when all is said and done, it will still end.

Cue the mournful tones of lament as we go over some of the more popular theories of just GoT will end.

5. Arya will finally get revenge on Cersei, but in a very unique way.

These first two theories were recounted by Nicolas Rivero from Mental Floss, but they do make a great deal of sense even though this one in particular doesn’t seem too saddening. Arya has been scheming to find a way to get to Cersei since she took a part in the beheading of her father, Ned Stark. But what might be sad about this, besides the theory that she might be wearing Jaime’s face while doing it, means that if Arya is in King’s Landing, then Winterfell likely succumbed to the White Walkers, meaning that she and everyone else had to flee. That alone is pretty saddening, but it could also be a suicide mission on Arya’s part if the Hound isn’t there to handle his zombified brother, the Mountain.

4. Jon will have to kill Dany.

Using theories he’s found from other fans using Redditor, Nicolas also brings up the question of the Azor Ahai, who according to legend had to thrust his blade into the heart of his wife to make the weapon even more powerful. It is kind of strange how the sacrifice of another in this story leads to power since one might think it would weaken their stance and their mental capability to continue the fight. But given that Dany is the mother of dragons and a true Targaryen it might be one of the only ways to allow Jon to finally take down the Night King. But if her other two dragons are still around you might think that they’d take a bit of offense to this.

3. Clegane Bowl is finally going to come, and it’s going to be epic.

These next three theories are explained by Zoe Delahuntey-Light from GamesRadar and could be among the most desired theories to see come true in the entire show. This one in particular is going to be nothing short of breath-taking since in the earliest days of the show it was obvious that the Clegane brothers didn’t care for each other in the slightest. the Hound has even promised his brother that they would finish things, and we know that when the Hound promises something he usually does his best to keep his word. It’s going to be a vicious fight to say the least since the Mountain has in fact become the unstoppable killing machine that might force the Hound to overcome his fear of fire and do what he needs to in order to overcome his zombified sibling.

2. The Night King will attack King’s Landing first.

This seems like a theory that is easy to blow out of the water initially since it would appear that the Night King is going to lead his forces on an attack against Winterfell first and foremost since it lies in his path and the first logical target. But King’s Landing is the ultimate prize to be honest, and the army of the dead doesn’t exactly fear being pinned between two enemies since the more that fall, the more can be risen from the dead. Why he would attack King’s Landing first is kind of hard to imagine, but there are a lot of other theories that seem to have something to do with the explanation to this that might make sense.

1. The Night King is really a Stark.

Now tell me this wouldn’t be saddening since it would mean that the Starks have been tied to the Night King the ENTIRE TIME, and it would also mean that the Children of the Forest had something against the Starks from the beginning, or were just using one of theirs in order to strike back at mankind. There are so many different ways to take this theory and spin it to other uses that it boggles the mind and is simply too depressing to think about in its entirety. But one thing seems certain, if the Night King was a Stark in his former life, then coming to Winterfell could mean that he’s there for more than just conquest.

There are a lot of other theories kicking around out there, but we’ll have to wait until Sunday to see which ones start to unfold.
