To me one of the biggest signs of success from a sports movie, assuming you’ve got the acting and directing down (which is damned near impossible), is to somehow make the inevitable interesting. For example, we always know the Rocky is going to win, but it’s the how that draws us in. Despite our knowledge that Rocky’s villain will always go down, we’re still captivated by how it’s going to happen.
One movie that I think does it best is Major League. The entire movie you know that the Indians will have a showdown with the Yankees and that they’ll win the game yet we don’t love the movie any less because of how awesome the build up and eventual triumph actually is.
If there’s one scene to pump you up it’s when Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn makes his final relief appearance and the stadium goes wild. This whole sequence absolutely rules. It’s the perfect capture of the mood at a baseball game. This was just awesome. Cerrano’s homerun and Willie’s slide also count as being serious pump up moments in this movie but I like this one above the rest.
