Women have made a lot of sacrifices to get to where they are today. Yes, there are still issues in which they must face, but the hope remains that they will get there eventually. On this week’s mid-season finale of Madam Secretary, women’s rights are at the forefront as the fight for equality continues.
The solution Elizabeth suggested at the end of the episode is not a great one, but it is a start. Though women in Afghanistan will still be able to get an education and maintain their rights, they cannot work for the government. On the one hand, it deters the purpose of the Women Transform the World conference; it’s better than the military route. I’m glad that Admiral Hill was present at the conference so she can hear first-hand about the struggles that women in third-world or war-torn countries are going through. I’d like to think that she came of her own accord, but it would make sense if Elizabeth invited her.
Meanwhile, Henry and his team go to Kabul to talk to one of Dmitri’s old friends, Matvey Sokolov. They convinced Sokolov that he would be safe and well-compensated if he helped the U.S. with the Russian situation. Unfortunately, Sokolov got tortured to death along with his girlfriend. I hope that he didn’t give Dmitri up to the Russians, but one is willing to say anything just to avoid certain death.
Speaking of Dmitri, he and Stevie finally got to share a kiss after their almost kiss in the last episode. It’s like the Deckerstar kiss all over again only this time; it’s not at the beach. I’m glad that the eldest McCord child has found someone that appreciates her, but I still worry about the day when Dmitri’s secret finally comes out into the open. Will she still have feelings for him after she learns the truth? I also wonder what Dmitri was planning to tell his girlfriend at his apartment? I hope to get some answers when the show returns in the new year.
In happier news, Daisy returns from maternity leave. She also contacted Joe’s mother to tell her about baby Joanna. I’m shocked that Mrs. Garcia took the news so well. Perhaps she is happy that a part of her son lives in the baby girl. Maybe grandma can help babysit when Daisy is at work? Though it’s quite a long drive from Washington, D.C. to Connecticut. Welcome back, Daisy!
Final Thoughts:
The scene where Elizabeth snuck in her reading glasses into Henry’s suitcase was very heart-warming. Good thing the professor didn’t have to stay in Afghanistan for an extended period. Wouldn’t want Mrs. McCord to worry about her husband while working as the Secretary of State, now would we?
I understand the whole CIA checking in on agents who have served in rehab thing but did they have to do it to make the agent feel paranoid? I mean I thought it was the Russians who were in the car that followed Dmitri from the restaurant. Oh, it also seems that the CIA knows about Dmitri and Stevie. I have a feeling that things are going to get messy.
