Inside the Making of “Blade Runner 2049”

It’s hard to imagine that the original Blade Runner was released in 1982, an unbelievable 35 years ago. We all know how sci-fi movies were back then when special effects were far from what they are now. The original movie, however, broke through the boundaries of movie making with the special effects they employed. The follow up to the movie is coming out this coming October, and fans all over the world can’t wait to see what’s in store for the blade running story.

Everyone remembers what Blade Runner was like, and according to director Denis Villeneuve, it affected him completely. The rest of the new movie’s cast weighs in on the original film similarly, stating that Blade Runner was the type of movie that stuck with you for the rest of your life. You had to watch it over and over just because of how otherworldly it was. It was great filmmaking at its worst, and that’s something that you just don’t forget. The unique visualization of the original, the cinematography techniques, and the storytelling have all been influential in the industry overall and will be much influential to the sequel as well.

The sequel, Blade Runner 2049, takes us to Los Angeles 30 years after the original Blade Runner plot occurred. The set will reflect the same sentiments of the original–the dystopian atmosphere and the noir poetic sights and sounds among many others. Considering that there’s been some time that passed between the two stories, this new film will stand on its own merit. It’ll feature its own unique qualities that will give us the future of the future. The production designs are focused on giving the film a visual aesthetic like no other, almost dreamy and unreal. There’s almost a monochromatic feel to the atmosphere, something that’s almost a premonition of impending doom for that particular world.

One challenge this crew decided to take on from the very beginning is to eliminate the extensive use of green screens. Director Villeneuve and his crew made everything that will be seen onscreen, a feat that has no equal in today’s world of special effects and CGI. All the sets and props are made from scratch, and this is something we’re expecting to give the film a great sense of authenticity and quality. These combined with the use of miniatures will give us the look that can only be expected from the sequel of Blade Runner.

For the cast, working in the set of the new film needed to feel personal, as personal as it felt for director Villeneuve. This meant spending as much time in the environment as possible, believing that that time and that place is the only thing that exists. We’re also set to see the star of the original show, Harrison Ford, in this sequel and get the continuation of his story along with new characters such as Ryan Gosling’s and Jared Leto’s. The film will hopefully just be the beginning to even more installments in the future, and we’re looking forward to see how this recreation will paint the future for us.
