Gotham Season 1 Episode 18 Review: ”Everyone Has a Cobblepot”

Gotham

This week’s episode of Gotham picks up where it left off last week, with Fish Mooney deciding to pull her eye out and Bruce dealing with a recovering Alfred at the hospital after he was stabbed by a former friend that was hired by Wayne Enterprises to spy on Bruce.

We get to meet another DC villain this week with the introduction of the Dollmaker (played by Colm Feore), who is the man in charge of whatever prison it is that Fish is trapped in. Also, just to make it clear to those who might be wondering: this Dollmaker is not the same version that we saw on Arrow, where the Barton Mathis incarnation was used; the one on Gotham is the Francis one. I expected him to be creepy here, but he was surprisingly very distant and calm.

The thing that bothered me with Fish getting a new eye is that it makes the whole scene from last week utterly pointless. It would have been much more interesting if she had to live only one eye for the rest of her time on the series, but nope, they had to give her a new one. I was overall not very interested in this arc at all because other than Fish turning on everyone in that prison and working with the Dollmaker, what really happened in this episode with her? The writers hasn’t really been able to get me too invested in this character in the majority of these past episodes, and at this point, I’m not expecting her to make it out alive by the end of the season.

Gordon really made this episode worth watching, as his character continues this amazing journey where you are seeing more changes in him compared to the Gordon we met in the pilot. As Flass gets released and reinstated after Commissioner Loeb uses his connections to get him out, Gordon’s anger just explodes, which is more interesting than anything else. Some might say that he is starting to get somewhat dark, but the thing is that anyone who lives in Gotham has a little shred of darkness inside of them. Gordon, in whatever incarnation you look at, has always used his personal darkness to make the best out of what he has when it comes to the GCPD.

For example, he has to, once again, make a deal with The Penguin, who I swear is acting more and more like Gordon’s fanboy rather than someone that just wants him as an ally. I will say that it was definitely an eye-roller when it was revealed that Bullock was the secret witness that made it possible for Flass to get out as Loeb had a little something-something on Bullock. However, the fact that Bullock ends up siding with his partner in the end to try and get something on Loeb is admirable. I didn’t expect the twist with Loeb’s daughter Miriam, but either way, it’s good to see Gordon get another win. Although, despite his victory at the end, I would keep my eyes open if I were him because I’m sure some people at GCPD will make life a bit difficult for him.

Overall, this was a decent episode of Gotham and while I wasn’t bothered by too many things in it, it wasn’t a particular suspenseful one. It will be interesting to see how these last four episodes play out when the show comes back from its hiatus.

Gotham returns with new episodes on Monday April 13th, 8/7c on FOX.
