In their latest show, “Grown-ish,” fans get to follow Zoey Johnson as he moves off to college and learns that in the real world, not everything will always go your way. “Grown-ish” Wasn’t the Title that was Going to be Used in the Beginning
When the concept of a spin-off show from “Black-ish” was first proposed to the producers of Freeform, it didn’t have the name “Grown-ish” that everyone has seen the previews for. In fact, it had a different name altogether that may not have been as catchy — “College-ish.” Most people are glad that “Grown-ish” was the final name, as this applies to a much broader audience and will likely help with better ratings.

That’s exactly what “Grown-ish” actress Francia Raisa did when her close friend Selena Gomez was in need. In September of 2017, when Gomez revealed that a kidney transplant was necessary as part of the treatment she was receiving for lupus, Raisa didn’t hesitate to answer the call.
The College Portrayed in the Show Doesn’t Really Exist
While there were quite a few of California colleges and universities that the show could have based the show on, they decided to make one up. Yes, that’s right, the campus you see of a California University is completely made up. This may have been in an effort to create whatever they wanted for the show.

One of the things fans loved about “Black-ish” was the voice over narration that really helped to introduce characters, build the backstory and more. Well, due to the success of the concept in the initial show, it has been carried through to the new one, as well. This is something that works, so why change it, is probably what the producers were thinking.
Shahidi Put Off College to Make a Show About College
Knowing she would have the staring role in “Grown-ish,” Shahidi made the decision to delay her own college experience to complete Season 1 of the show. In fact, the put off attending Harvard, where she was accepted for fall admission in 2017. However, she has stated that she plans on attending very soon to pursue her real-life college experiences.
