You’re going to be seeing plenty of Halloween related posts until October 31st. Deal with it. However, I will say this. Perhaps no parent and child costume combination will compete with what was produced last year. A father by the name of Michael Tapson has just set the bar extremely high with his Dark Crystal tribute. For those of you too young to remember, The Dark Crystal was a Jim Henson creation back in the 80s and both freaked out and impressed many of its viewers. It was an “adventure” fantasy type of movie that featured some extremely weird characters (and frankly really scary ones). How they haven’t made a remake at this point is beyond me.
In any event, here’s what Michael has to say about his creation:
My daughter, who is 10 years old, and I worked over a long weekend to make these costumes. We used mostly old stuff from around the house but had to buy quite a bit of cushion foam for the beast. The “beast” costume, which stands over 6 feet and has luminescent wiring to the skull, was inspired by Jim Henson’s work in The Dark Crystal, but the overall aesthetic we were looking for was more like Mad Max.
I’d say that father and daughter definitely nailed what they were looking for. The “beast” kind of reminds me of the Seksis from The Dark Crystal and daughter could probably pass for one of the lost children from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. No matter what look they were going for, these two would have been a hit at New York Comic Con over the weekend.
