Cillian Murphy is set to captivate audiences once again in the upcoming film Small Things Like These. The movie has recently been acquired by Lionsgate for distribution across North America, the UK, and Ireland. This adaptation of Claire Keegan’s novel promises to be a poignant watch.
Lionsgate Acquires Distribution Rights
Following its world premiere at the Berlinale, where the historical drama earned Emily Watson a Silver Bear, Small Things Like These was picked up by Lionsgate. Roadside Attractions will co-release it in the US.
Cillian Murphy Leads as Bill Furlong
The film is set in an Irish town during Christmas in 1985. It follows coal and timber merchant Bill Furlong (Murphy) as he uncovers dark secrets about a local convent’s treatment of unmarried mothers and their babies.
Murphy not only stars but also produces the film through his company Big Things Films, alongside Alan Moloney. Renowned actors like Emily Watson, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, Ciarán Hinds, and Zara Devlin join the cast.
An Ensemble Cast and Strong Production Team
The film boasts an impressive production team with contributions from Catherine Magee, Matt Damon, Drew Vinton, and executive producers Ben Affleck and Michael Joe of Artists Equity. Directed by Tim Mielants, with a screenplay by Enda Walsh, who previously collaborated with Murphy on Misterman and Grief Is The Thing With Feathers, the film promises high standards.
A Meaningful Premiere and Future Release
The Irish-Belgian production filmed in New Ross for four weeks, capturing the essence of County Wexford’s locations. A cast and crew numbering about 80 stayed locally to bring this story to life. While there isn’t a release date announced yet, distribution across key markets guarantees a broad audience reach.
