Obviously even the more serious shows have outtakes that catch the stars getting a little silly from time to time. It could be that filming is running late, or they’ve had to take too much time to get a scene right, or something, but during one of the takes the director sounded a bit irritated as the actors were somehow flubbing their lines again and again. Michael Simkins of The National has more to say on that matter. It could be that the actors just needed a break or it could be that they kept forgetting their lines or how to react but it’s fair to think that every now and then things are going to happen and the scene is going to be a little less than the director wants and things will go a bit off the rails. There are also those moments when people can get the giggles for whatever reason, which can also ruin the moment since Supernatural was supposed to be a completely serious show most times and anyone laughing could really screw up a scene. But that’s bound to happen in any show or movie since now and again people do tend to miss their cue and might set other people around them to laughing. Hey, it happens.
It’s comforting to know that at this point the showrunners are still able to display a sense of humor that keeps things light and kind of proves that anyone can laugh at things that went wrong during the course of a show. One thing that a lot of people still don’t realize about TV shows and movies is that it’s very rare for anyone to get the shot in one take and scenes usually end up taking a while to really get down on film before they get to move on. From stunts to simple dialogue a scene can take a while and until it’s over and done with the actors will be forced to go through one take after another until the director is satisfied that they nailed it and can move on. Some productions go a little smoother, some take a while, but there are times that it kind of depends on how quickly the actors can compose themselves and find their mark.
Obviously the actors like to get a bit silly sometimes and tend to do their own version of a scene, much to the consternation of the director at times but also to the amusement of their fellow actors. It’s funny really to see honest reactions on film since what we tend to get regularly is the finished product that’s been edited, polished, and delivered in a manner that allows us to be truly impressed by the end result. But seeing people react in a very real way when things go off the rails either by design or by accident is kind of funny since it grants a very human reaction to the whole thing since it’s very hard to fake when you screw up at something and on TV shows it’s actually kind of entertaining to see it happen since the actors tend to play it up quite a bit at times and make a good time of it now and again.
There are plenty of times when the actors might know what they’re supposed to do and then something happens, a moment occurs that they simply forget everything that was supposed to happen and they have to start all over. David Jays of The Guardian has something to add to this idea. Some people are actually pretty good at improvising when it comes to moments such as this but then there are those that somehow manage to goof up the scene and then try to make it better but have to keep starting again and again in order to get anything done. Like so many other things that can happen on set it’s just one more obstacle to get past when one or more of the actors somehow flub a line or a moment, but there are times when they can roll with it and others when they get a little too distracted and need to reset.
It’s hard to say what really gets an actor going, sometimes another actor can pull a face that strikes them as funny, or they might say something incorrect and it gets the people around them to giggling. Actors aren’t perfect after all and even those in Supernatural weren’t immune to screwing up a line or a moment here and there. The hope of course would be that they would at least be able to have fun with it and roll with whatever came along from time to time, otherwise it would be tough to work with each other when screw-ups did happen. It’s easy to imagine people getting a bit flustered now and again, but most bloopers tend to show that the actors were indeed having a good time, or were at least understanding.
