It’s about time someone brought comedy into the television competition industry. This niche has largely been untouched throughout the era of TV competitions. It’s true that we’ve seen some comedic acts on shows such as America’s Got Talent. But there aren’t many comedians that go on that show. Comedy shows have always been attracted to people, and even stand up specials on TV get great viewership. NBC has dialed in and is taking the lead on this one. The show Bring the Funny will really be the first of its kind, and it’s promising to be a good one from the looks of it. Here are 10 things about Bring the Funny that you ought to know.
1. The Director
It’s important to talk about Bring the Funny’s director because she’s going to bring so much into this show. Carrie Havel is one of the most successful names on reality television currently. She’s worked on shows such as America’s Got Talent, World of Dance, American Idol, and Dancing with the Stars. Carrie will be bringing her expertise and her talent onto Bring the Funny, and we can expect nothing but great things.
2. The Format
Just because a show is categorized as reality TV doesn’t mean that it goes completely off script. We all know that some reality shows have to go by minimum amounts of script in order to follow some kind of narrative. Bring the Funny is known as an unscripted type of reality TV programming. Much like other television competition shows and live events, the comedians on the show have absolutely no script to follow. It’ll be a true test of someone’s chops and delivery and a true test to see if someone is actually funny or not.
3. The Host
If you’ve ever seen the show Insecure or follow it madly like we do, you’d probably recognize the name. Amanda Seales is a true talent in the world of comedy. She’s also credited as an actress, a DJ, content creator, poet, musician, and a host. Sure enough, she got the gig of hosting Bring the Funny, and we couldn’t get any happier. Amanda’s comedy may not be for everyone, but it’ll be good to see contrasted against some of the amateur comedians we’ll be seeing on the show.
4. The Judges
NBC definitely didn’t hold back with its list of select judges for Bring the Funny. First off, we’ve got the beautiful and charming Chrissy Teigen as judge number one. This woman basically made a name for herself because of her personality. Sure she may be John Legend’s wife, but we might actually like her more than Legend. Next, Kenan Thompson of Saturday Night Live is judge number two. Kenan has been around in the comedy niche for as long as any of us can remember. He was just a kid back then making us all laugh, and he’s still making us laugh as an adult. Last, Jeff Foxworthy is back on television finally. We believe that Jeff will be the voice of wisdom and reason in the show. He’s definitely smarter than a 5th grader, so we know he’ll have plenty of good things to say.
5. The Acts
There are a lot of funny people out there, and it’s such a great opportunity for all comedians to have a platform designed just for them to shine on. Bring the Funny will feature a total of 40 acts in the show. The acts are going to be divided into three categories: variety, stand up, and sketch. Some acts might be an individual while others might include two or three members. There are a few groups that have 6 members, but majority of the contestants are solo acts.
6. The Rounds
The show will feature a total of four rounds. The first is the Open Mic round, which is basically what it is. It’s probably the purest form of comedic performance, and it’ll probably weed out the worst in the bunch. Then there’s the Comedy Clash round and the Showcase round before the finale arrives. The finale is going to be a live performance, and America will get to vote who will be the winner of the entire thing.
7. The Prize
There’s no competition worth doing if the prize is not worth fighting for. Out of all the TV competitions out there, Bring the Funny might have the best prize of them all. All the comedy acts on the show are performing their bests to win the amazing $250,000 grand prize money. And that’s not all. The winning act of the show will get the opportunity to perform during the Just for Laughs Festival happening in 2020.
8. The Reach
NBC is expecting a large viewership for this show, and that was proven during the premiere. The reason for that is not only because of the large amount of contestants coming in. A good amount of comedic acts are actually coming from other countries. This is not just an American comedy competition. This has become an international comedy TV competition that’s sure to have followers worldwide. Bring the Funny has contestants from places such as Auckland, New Zealand; Victoria, Australia; London, UK; Ealing, UK; and a native from France and one from Finland.
9. The Comedy
You might be surprised to find magicians, puppeteers, and musicians on the show. After all, this isn’t America’s Got Talent. However, the only skill required of all those that auditioned for the show was the ability to make an audience laugh. It didn’t matter if you made people laugh through your magic, your music, your puppet, or anything else. As long as you’re funnier than most of the people that tried out for the show, you were in.
10. The Showing
We’re going to get 10 weeks of nonstop laughing on NBC’s Bring the Funny. The show recently premiered on July 9, and it’s scheduled to air every Tuesday on the network. The finale will be the 10th episode and will be live. Stay tuned to see which act makes it to the very end. You’ll get a lot of laughs along the way.
