Arguing Why the Creed Movies should be Discontinued

Creed

It is frustrating that once you have finished a series or movie and would love to see how the story unfolds in its sequel or second season, you hear that it has been canceled. Usually, it happens to the best of the films, yet some of the movies keep giving us a second and third dose of something we are tired of watching. Take, for instance, Creed; we have two already, and here is why we would not like the third one (which is happening).

Almost similar storyline

The thing about great movies is the element of surprise, and once that is gone, then there is no point in watching because you already have an idea of what to expect. In the first Creed movie, Adonis is all about wanting to make a name for himself in the boxing ring and even tries to hide the fact that he is the son of a famous boxer. In the end, he still uses his father’s name to get to fight with Ricky Conlan, another boxing champion.

In Creed II, the plot does not depart so much from the one in Creed I. This time; it is Adonis’ late father’s opponent Ivan Drago who wants to reclaim his lost glory using his son to fight against Adonis. Both movies are all about sons who want to carry on a legacy left by their fathers. While Adonis is struggling to do right by a father he never knew and who he feels he might owe for the popularity he now has, Viktor is being forced by his father to maintain the honor of Ivan Drago. However, eventually, Ivan and Viktor have to give in to avoid serious bodily harm or death, like what happened to Apollo Creed.

There is also the thing about the mother to the boxers in the movies being portrayed as a bad influence while the fathers are glorified. In Creed I, we learn that Adonis’ mother had an affair with Apollo while he was married to Maryanne. We do not get to know more about what happened to her. In Creed II, Viktor Drago’s mother abandoned her family after Ivan, her husband, lost to Rocky Balboa thirty-three years ago. Although she attempts to come back to their lives now that Viktor might become champion, she leaves again upon seeing that her son is losing.

Lack of flow

We might get used to many flashbacks here and there in some films, but we still get to follow the story. In Creed I, the movie leaves a lot of room for the viewer to fill in the blanks on their own. As it starts, you see the year is 1985 and children are fighting. The next scene is one of the children who was fighting in what looks like a cell, and a woman enters saying she was his father’s wife.

After that, we are shown twenty years later in 2015, a black man and a white man in boxing gear, and we are left to assume that they were fighting or were preparing to fight. Immediately after the scene, we are shown 12 hours later the black man, who by now we are assuming is the one who was in juvenile, in an office and resigning from a job. We do not even know what kind of job he did or the position he held only that he had recently been promoted, as his manager is kind enough to let us know.

We cannot deny that a story should leave room for suspense, but in Creed, there is a whole lot of speculation for you to do. The scenes keep jumping from one to the other with no clear flow. Even after the woman, we come to know is Maryanne comes to talk to the young boy, we understand a few minutes later that she adopted the boy and they have been living together ever since.

Moreover, when it comes to the romance that is supposedly between Adonis and Bianca, it moves too fast. One minute Adonis is knocking at her door, the next they are eating, and soon they are on the floor sharing a kiss. There is love at first sight, flings, and one night stands that seem real, but what happens between Adonis and Bianca looks like a staged love. We do not get to see any chemistry.

Boring

Have you ever watched a movie that makes you not want to get up to even go to the toilet no matter how bad you need to? Well, this is not such a movie; you can work on a project you need to get done while popping your head to catch a scene, and you still will not feel like you missed anything. You keep waiting for that scene that will ignite the entire movie only to have it end as you still are waiting for the moment.

Maybe once you hear that Sylvester Stallone is a producer and will be starring in the film you want to watch it knowing how much action the man gives. With movies like the Rambo series, especially I, II, and III, you can watch as many times and never get bored. Unfortunately, although in Creed they try to blend Rocky Balboa in it, the movie still does not get interesting. We agree that the Rocky film series in which Rocky Balboa was the main character was also great, and perhaps we hoped that he would lend the same action to Creed, but it is not the same. Now Rocky Balboa is only a trainer who barely even trains Adonis in Creed I and the most important advice he gives Adonis is “Step by step, punch by punch, round and round.”

Further, the movie keeps popping up names like they are supposed to mean something to us. You see Danny Wheeler with a little pop-up appearing about his boxing history, and then he gets in the ring with Adonis. Other names that get thrown around include Leo Sporino and Ricky Conlan then suddenly the movie changes to be all about Adonis fighting with Ricky Conlan, and once the fight is over, it ends.
