You can tell that Joey Paur of GeekTyrant is excited for the thrill of another Mad Max movie, and George Miller is fully on board with the idea since it’s already been in the pipeline as far as ideas go and it will be coming in one way or another eventually. It’s going to take a while since Miller already has another project he’s working on, but eventually we’re going to get to see Max and Furiosa back on the big screen and some people just can’t wait for it. The story we got last time in Fury Road was something that fans were a bit divided on since it didn’t seem quite like the movies of old, but at the same time it was a thrill ride and something dynamic enough to make people want something else since the story of Max is one that is bound to be beset with tragedy, hardship, and the type of lone wolf behavior that makes him such an intriguing character. Miller has actually said this about the movie:
“I’m not done with the Mad Max story and I think you have to be a multi-tasker and there’s certainly another Mad Max coming down the pike after this. We’re in preparation on that as well. It’s an interesting question, the idea of multi-tasking. I discuss this with other filmmakers and I think what happens to me is that when you’re working on one thing, and you get so distracted and focused on that one thing, it’s like a creative holiday to focus on the other one for a bit. It helps you achieve that objectivity, to look at the thing afresh each time and say, I thought I was doing this, but it doesn’t seem to be the case now.
“The more different the films are, the more interesting that is. A really good example: I was working on Happy Feet Two while Fury Road was getting up and then falling down. They couldn’t have been more different. One was animation, the other live action. It worked for me.”
Fury Road went in a very different direction than the other movies that came before it, and yet there were enough similar elements in the story that made it familiar enough to a lot of fans that were hoping to see something that would do the other movies proud. Tom Hardy was a great pick for the part of Max since it does feel as though bringing Mel Gibson back would have infuriated a lot of fans for a couple of reasons. One is that he’s been something of a problematic character in Hollywood for several years now, and the other is that he’s just getting kind of old for the part and unless a story could have been written that would accommodate this then it might have fallen a bit flat. Hardy was a good replacement since he can take on the role of a character as needs be and make it work even if he’s not entirely perfect. Another good thing to note is that like it or not, the movies of long ago were great in their own way, but to revive the franchise something was needed that wouldn’t alienate the older fans and would entice any younger fans in a way that would keep them watching and not feeling as though the old movies were trying to make a comeback.
The great part of the movie is that nothing has really changed in terms of the surroundings. Cameron Koch of Tech Times has more to say on this matter. They’re still stuck in the middle of a desert wasteland where survival is based upon who can be the most ruthless and who’s willing to do the dirtiest deeds to get by. Max has a conscience and a heart but at the same time he’s a pragmatic sort that doesn’t want to end up just another dust-dried corpse in the middle of the sands being picked apart by scavengers. Furiosa is doing her best to survive and to help those that need her, but crossing Immortan Joe was one of the worst mistakes to make. Not killing him first was an even worse mistake since his regime might have crumbled had such a thing happened. But then we wouldn’t have had the same type of movie that we got, or the prospects of whatever might be coming next. This is a case of the writers doing their job and making sure that people actually want to keep watching since the story had a few moments in which watching was kind of difficult thanks to the pacing, but the overall feeling is that this was a well-executed movie and one that could go in a number of different directions that could even link to the original movies if Miller had the inclination. That’d be interesting to see.
