Jewel is one of the many success stories that you hear about when a musician has come from just about nothing, meaning they were living on the street, in their car, or in various other locations while attempting to get noticed. Hailing from a homestead in Alaska she went from venue to venue trying to get her music out there for people to hear in an attempt to get noticed by someone, anyone. Eventually someone did take a liking to what she was doing and helped her to develop her sound and create a career that has lasted for many years now, carrying from sleeping in her car to being a famous singer that many people all over the world know about. She might not be as well-known as she used to be only a decade or two ago, but her rise to fame and her subsequent run were impressive enough that her story was able to inspire a great many people that embraced her music with great zeal.
Here are a few of her songs as they’ve appeared in TV or movies.
5. Dawson’s Creek – Hands
When a lot of us were still kids or adolescents a lot of people went nuts for this show since it had some of the biggest up and coming stars on its roster and it was something that a lot of teens felt related to their own lives in one way or another. However it happened the show became something that a lot of fans rallied around, but like all things it had to end eventually. The ‘kids’ could only remain in high school for so long, and eventually things would have had to move on anyway. Since that time a few of the stars have gone on to do bigger and better things, but a few of them have kind of fallen of the map at this point.
4. Clueless – All By Myself
Clueless is almost like watching a teenage fashion show on parade until the illusion gets ripped away when Cher finds that she has to stand on her own two feet after things go sideways. It’s the same way in real life when people realize that they’re not as popular as they once were and have to find a way back to prominence or deal with the fact that they’re old news that needs to be revived somehow. But of course throughout the movie Cher comes to a few realizations that allow her to regain her popular mien and the movie ends on something of a high note. That’s usually the way a teen movie goes.
3. The Craft – Under the Water
Being a witch and a teenager at the same time seems like a very bad mix since hormones and magic don’t seem to go hand in hand. It’d be like giving a temperamental child a firecracker and telling them to be careful in the hope that they’d actually listen. But as the movie goes on you get the point since the magic that the young witches are granted becomes a rather unstable and very dangerous thing as three of them take their power to a very dark place and begin to harm people for no better reason than revenge, which, when it comes to magic, is usually a big no-no in the movies.
2. Phenomenon – Have a Little Faith in Me
Poor George was just trying to live a normal life and get by with what he’d been given. But when he’s ‘given’ a lot of extra brain power to work with he starts coming up with new and radical ideas on how to farm, how to live, and just how to exist. The telekinesis is something that scares the living hell out of him at first, but becomes more and more useful as time goes on. The only problem is that George wasn’t altered somehow by aliens and he wasn’t touched by the hand of God. It ended up that he had a brain tumor that had somehow unlocked hidden portions of his brain, activating them even as it was killing him slowly.
1. Saturday Night Live – Who Will Save Your Soul
SNL is the show that musicians go to once they’ve become established, though it’s also a proving ground at times since if the crowd likes the musician, which they rarely ever don’t, it does wonders for their career as they continue rise in popularity. Reputations are made and kind of shattered on this show and Jewel wasn’t hesitant to get up on stage as she gave a great performance and allowed the crowd to make up their minds about just how good she really was.
Lately it would seem that she hasn’t been quite as prominent when it comes to making appearances, but she’s still around and her older stuff is still highly enjoyable to listen to.
