This year’s contenders on the Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category are consists of two previous winners, two previous nominees, and three first-time nominees. One of them played Aaron Burr on Hamilton. One of them is a well-known singer. One of them was on three Oscar Best Picture contenders last year. This is a competitive category and we can’t wait to find out this September 17 about who will follow the steps of last year’s winner, Alexander Skarsgard. Here’s my analysis and predictions in this category.
Jeff Daniels – Godless
Jeff Daniels played the role of Frank Griffin. This is his fifth Emmy nomination. He is also nominated this year for his leading role in The Looming Tower. He previously won for his leading role in the drama series The Newsroom. He submitted the premiere episode “An Incident at Creede.” Will he win? Possibly. He is playing a menacing outlaw which is very appealing to the voters. He is a veteran and he has won before which means that he is on the radar. The show performed well at the nominations. The downside is that the voters might possibly honor him instead for his performance in The Looming Tower.
Brandon Victor Dixon – Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert
Brandon Victor Dixon played the role of Judas Iscariot. This is his first Emmy nomination. Will he win? Possibly. He is considered as the standout of the live television special and became a sudden contender in this category because of that. His performance received acclaim from critics and audience. The downside is that this is a theatrical performance and voters don’t usually go for that.
John Leguizamo – Waco
John Leguizamo played the role of Jacob Vazquez. This is his second Emmy nomination. He previously won for his performance in the variety special Freak. He submitted the episode “The Strangers Across the Street.” Will he win? Maybe. He is the only cast member on the show who got nominated which means that there is support for him. I’ve also heard that a lot of voters are actually voting for him, even though his nomination has been considered as a surprise. The downside is that the show is not an Outstanding Limited Series contender and he only appeared in the first half of the season.
Ricky Martin – The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Ricky Martin played the role of Antonio D’Amico. This is his first Emmy nomination. He submitted the premiere episode “The Man Who Would Be Vogue.” Will he win? Not highly likely. His nomination also came as a surprise, but he is also considered as the least possible winner out of all the three actors from the show who are nominated in this category. He also didn’t have a lot of showcase throughout the run. He might also vote-split with his two co-stars. But, he is a well-known singer and the voters might be surprised that he is also a good actor as well.
Edgar Ramirez – The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Edgar Ramirez played the role of Gianni Versace. This is his second Emmy nomination. He previously got nominated for his performance in the limited series Carlos. He submitted the episode “Ascent.” Will he win? Possibly. He played the titular character and the center of the crime. It is also a transformative role and he is playing a real-life figure which is usually appealing to the voters. The downside is that he might vote-split with his two co-stars who are also nominated in this category.
Michael Stuhlbarg – The Looming Tower
Michael Stuhlbarg played the role of Richard Clarke. This is his first Emmy nomination. He submitted the finale episode “9/11.” Will he win? Maybe. He is playing a respectable real life figure which is usually appealing to the voters. He is also playing an American government official who is well-known and beloved by most people. He is also a lookalike of his real-life counterpart. He is also the only supporting actor from the show who is nominated. The downside is that the show is not an Outstanding Limited Series contender.
Finn Wittrock – The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
Finn Wittrock played the role of Jeffrey Trail. This is his second Emmy nomination. He previously got nominated for his performance in American Horror Story: Freak Show. He submitted the episode “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Will he win? Maybe. His episode submission centers mostly on his character and it talks about an important issue which is homophobia in the military. He is also part of the most-nominated limited series this year. The downside is that he might vote-split with two of his co-stars who are also nominated in this category.
VERDICT: My prediction right now is Jeff Daniels of Godless. He is the safest one to predict right now in this category and the three actors who are nominated in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story might vote-split.
