David Letterman is coming back to Netflix in a very strange way and former president Barack Obama and George Clooney are set to be two of his guests. The reason I say a strange way is that he’ll be doing just one episode per month, which is odd because Netflix usually likes to give out an entire series so people can watch it, not dole them out on a monthly basis. It will be interesting to see if this manages to keep peoples’ interest or if it will backfire and cause them to think that it’s not really worth the trouble.
Obama was something of a regular on the Letterman show back during his presidency and was proud to be one of Dave’s last guests. This will be the first time since the end of his presidency that he’ll have come on with Letterman, and it should be a fun show since it will be about an hour long and focused entirely on one guest. The format is changing just a bit and it will change more since Letterman won’t be confined to the studio as he was before his retirement, he’ll be allowed to interview people in more natural settings, which could mean outside, an office, or anywhere it’s deemed appropriate to be.
It kind of seems like either Letterman doesn’t want to let go of the show business life or it doesn’t want to let go of him since he’s coming back after what should have been a well-deserved retirement. People can claim that Letterman might just need the money, because after all when ever someone goes back to work after retiring that’s usually where a lot of people go with the conversation. While a lot of celebrities go broke somehow while living a lavish and decadent lifestyle Letterman is not one of them. He doesn’t really need the money and in truth could probably live pretty comfortably to the end of his days. But there’s that need to be in front of the camera doing what he loves to do, a desire to be there, on the show, doing just what he’s done for so long.
You don’t get over that kind of thing. I’ve seen it too many times when people retire that if they have nothing else they’re really passionate about to keep them busy they’ll pine for the days when they had something they loved to do. It’s odd that retirement could be worse than working, but somehow I don’t get the feeling that this is how it is for Letterman. In truth I think it’s more along the lines that he loved what he was doing when he was at his desk and kind of wanted to get that feeling back. He could have been enjoying his retirement, but a return to his talk show would have been a lure that he just couldn’t resist.
Hopefully this show will go off without a hitch.
