The Top Uses of Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman” in Movies or TV

Percy Sledge was the first person to sing When A Man Loves A Woman, but over the years there were a few issues that had to be hammered out in order for the true ownership of the song to come to light. The song itself is a great track that really grants a lot of emotion and feeling to come through and has been sung by a few different people throughout it’s history. It’s been used in serious movies and spoofs alike to great effect and has even been the defining song for a few programs. It’s definitely a song that you need to be in the mood for however, otherwise it tends to get ignored after the first few seconds since it’s a situational kind of track.

Or maybe that’s just how I feel about it.

5. American Idol

As a song choice on American Idol this is one that you don’t dare screw up on since it is such an iconic song and is one that people want to hear sung correctly and without any screw-ups. If a person can nail each note the way it needs to be done then it sounds absolutely wonderful and makes them almost an instant star since when done perfectly this song can make anyone look good.

4. The Simpsons

Poor Milhouse. He has such an undying love for Lisa Simpson that it’s kind of tragic even as it’s kind of hilarious in a sad, puppy love kind of way. Of course he’s kind of like the whipping boy on the Simpsons that always gets ridiculed no matter how he turns out in any of the alternate variations of the show. Some people just seem born to suffer at times.

3. Freddy Got Fingered

Freddy Got Fingered is what happens when Tom Green makes a movie.  The premise was just as ridiculous as the talk show that he had for a while and in fact got a lot worse. This is a guy that got drunk on live TV, at his home thankfully, and filmed it so that we could all have the dubious pleasure of seeing him vomit and act like an even bigger fool.

2. When A Man Loves A Woman

So first the wife is a drunk and on top of that is an abusive, neglectful parent. But eventually she gets better and the husband still isn’t happy since he realizes that by not dealing with the problem he was enabling her to be this way. Once she’s better she begins to experience life and leaves him with the kids, which eventually puts a strain on their marriage.

1. Percy Sledge

I do believe that whatever controversy occurred over this song was eventually cleared up, as it’s been seen that both Sledge and Michael Bolton have performed it on the same stage in the past. Sledge wanted partial credit for having written the song as I recall, and there was some issue about Bolton singing the song and not giving due credit or obtaining permission to use it, or somewhere along those lines.

In any case, the song is still around and it’s still widely used.
