Episode VIII of the Star Wars franchise is coming out soon, meaning that it is receiving more and more focus from the media in recent times. One example is a recent interview with Daisy Ridley, which resulted in her revealing that she would not be interested in reprising her role as Rey in a hypothetical set of Star Wars movies set further into the future. This is not because she has a problem with the franchise. Instead, this is because she feels that since she signed up for three movies, the completion of three movies would be a natural stopping point for her.
Ridley’s statement is even more interesting when compared with the other statements that have been made by other people about the future of the Star Wars franchise so far. For example, J.J. Abrams has stated that he will be treating Episode IX as though it was the conclusion of the story of the Skywalkers. However, this contrasts with some of the things that have been said by Kathleen Kennedy as well as Bob Iger, which suggest that the lead characters of the new trilogy could make a return in future movies. Regardless, it remains to be seen whether Ridley will change her mind at some point in the future, but considering her explicit refusal in the interview, that seems improbable. Instead, it might be more interesting to see how Disney proceeds in the future, particularly since it still has the option of replacing her with someone else in the role if it feels an overwhelming need for Rey to return in post-Episode IX movies.
What Does the Future Hold for the Star Wars Franchise?
Regardless, the Star Wars franchise is secure and will remain secure for the foreseeable future. Besides Episode VIII and Episode IX, there is Solo, which will be a movie centered around a much younger Han Solo, as well as a still unnamed anthology film, which has been rumored to be centered around Boba Fett, that will be coming out at some point in the future. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that Rian Johnson has been chosen to develop another trilogy of Star Wars movies, which will have nothing to do with Episodes I to IX but instead focus on a separate cast of characters. Something that has resulted in a frenzy of speculation from Star Wars fans by drawing on a wide range of material from the old Expanded Universe.
Finally, it should be mentioned that a number of actors such as Ewan McGregor, Ian McDiarmid, and Samuel L. Jackson have expressed an interest in returning to the Star Wars franchise, which has resulted in a lot of speculation about what projects might be under consideration at the moment. Summed up, it is clear that there will be no shortage of Star Wars movies for Star Wars fans anytime soon, which is not counting all of the Star Wars books, comics, video games, and other secondary media that will continue to get made for decades and decades to come.
