Pokemon was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995. The concept is that humans catch, train, and battle their Pokemon for sport. When the franchise was first launched in Japan, the focus was solely on video games that were developed for Game Boy. As the games were an instant success, the franchise expanded to incorporate other activities and merchandise. The range now includes video games, animated television shows, trading card games, movies, comic books, toys, and collectibles.
It was not just the range of merchandise and activities that expanded; it was also the geographical popularity of Pokemon. Although it was created in Japan, the characters and games soon became popular in other areas of Asia. This popularity then spread further afield to both Europe and the United States. Now, Pokemon is a global phenomenon.
One reason for the spread of popularity for this franchise was the release of the movies as this created global awareness of the brand. In 1998, the first Pokemon movie was released called ‘Pokemon: The First Movie- Mewtwo Strikes Back’. There has now been a total of 20 Pokemon movies released. The latest was the 2017 animated film ‘Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You!’.
It has also been announced that there is another Pokemon movie in the pipeline which will be called ‘Pokemon’s Detective Pikachu’. Rob Letterman will direct the film and the script is being written by Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman. The movie is being distributed in Japan by Toho and Universal Pictures will distribute outside Japan. There has been no date announced yet for this movie.
