Meet Zari, the Latest Addition to Legends of Tomorrow
Zari is the newest member of the team on Legends of Tomorrow. Although she is based on an existing DC Comics character, it’s worth noting that the character actually originated in a live-action TV show rather than the comic books. As a result, DC fans might have suspected her full name, which is Adrianna Tomaz.
Here are five fascinating facts about Zari that you may or may not have known:
Tala Ashe Brings Zari to Life
The character on Legends of Tomorrow is portrayed by Tala Ashe, an Iranian-American actress who has appeared in numerous media projects throughout her career. Some people might recognize her from Odyssey in 2015, while others might know her from Smash in 2012. There might even be some fans who remember her 26-episode role as Ameera Ali Aziz on As the World Turns.
Zari: The Grey Hat Hacktivist
In addition to her more mystical powers, Zari has been described as a grey hat hacktivist. The term “grey hat” is derived from the use of “white hat” and “black hat” for hackers, which refer to hackers who find vulnerabilities in their employers’ systems to improve cybersecurity and hackers who exploit vulnerabilities for personal gain, respectively. As a result, a grey hat hacker shares the benevolent intentions of their white-hatted counterparts but won’t hesitate to break into systems without the owners’ permission. Meanwhile, a hacktivist is someone who uses hacking to promote a cause of some sort. This is fitting for Zari, who hails from a future where prejudice and environmental neglect remain serious problems despite incredible technological advancements.
Zari’s Superhero Alter Ego: Isis
Zari is the Arrowverse version of the DC Comics character called Isis. This character is not actually the Egyptian goddess Isis, but instead draws her power from Isis and several other Egyptian deities. The superhero Isis possesses numerous powers, such as super strength, super speed, super intelligence, and control over the elements. However, it remains to be seen which of these powers her Arrowverse counterpart will exhibit.
Isis: From Live Action to Comic Books
Although Isis might be best known for her role in comic books, it’s interesting to note that she started out as a character in a live-action TV show. Specifically, she was created as the lead on The Secrets of Isis, which began as the second half of The Shazam! Isis Hour before getting its own time slot. The character became popular enough to transition into the comic books once the TV show was canceled.
Isis’s Connection to the Shazam! Characters
Given the character’s origins, it’s not surprising that Isis has a strong connection to the Shazam! characters, which has carried over to the comic book stories in which she has appeared. As a result, one can’t help but wonder whether other Shazam! characters will make an appearance in the Arrowverse. However, it’s wise to temper one’s optimism in this regard. After all, it’s well-known that DC Comics has movie plans for both Captain Marvel and Black Adam. That being said, there is at least one DC Comics superhero who appears in both the Arrowverse and the DC Extended Universe.
