Top Five Highlights From the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards

The annual BET Hip Hop Awards 2017 show was taped October 6 at the Jackie Gleason Theater at The Fillmore in Miami Beach and aired October 10. It was the first time in the decade that the ceremony was held outside of Atlanta. The BET Hip Hop Awards were created by comedian Katt Williams who hosted the first show in 2006. The Awards showcases hip hop performers, producers and video music directors. This year’s host in the new location was Miami’s DJ Khaled. He opened the show with his hit “I’m So Hood” kicking off an exciting night for Hip Hop.

Here are the top 5 highlights from the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards.

1. Migos Performance

The best performance of the night was by Migos. The trio performed their hit “Too Hotty” against a tropical forest background. Offset, Quavos and Takeoff shook the stage rapping to their hit in pink and purple jackets and tight jeans. Other great performers of the night were Big Sean, Post Malone, SCZ, French Montana. Fans of the trio are excited for the release of their next album “Culture 2” which promises several collaborations.

2. Cardi B

It was clearly Cardi B’s night. The newcomer showed up at the awards in a shiny sequence drss. She was nominated for 9 awards and won 5. Among them she won Best New Hip Hop Artist, Hustler of the Year and Made You Look. Cardi B also had a great performance at this year’s show. She performed her number 1 hit “Bodak Yellow” appearing on stage in a long fur coat which she removed during the performance to show a sexy pink dress. The hit song received the Single of the Year Award. Cardi B was seen earlier in the weekend in South Beach pre-celebrating with her friends from Migos. Cardi B just turned 25 and clearly this has been her breakthrough year in the hip hop world.

3. Kendrick Lamar

It was also Kendrick Lamar’s night. He won Best Album for “DAMN”. The hip hop artist also won Best Hip Hop Video for “Humble”, Hot Ticket Performer and Lyricist of the Year. Rapper Future brought Lamar on stage for during his performance which was a surprise to all. This year’s 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards host DJ Khaled was also a big winner at the awards ceremony. He won awards for MVP of the Year and for his song “Wild Thoughts”, a collaboration with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. Other winners of the night include Benny Boom for Video Direction, Metro Boomin for Producing, Nicki Manaj for Sweet 16: Best Featured Verse for her feature on Yo Gotti’s “Rake It Up”. Jay Z won for Impact Track for “The Story of O.J.”.

4. Eminem takes on Trump

Another big highlight of the 2017 BET Hip Hop Award show was Eminem’s freestyle rap “The Storm” against President Trump. The 4 minute rap took on the President for his views on the NFL, his plan to build a border wall and more, and racism. “The Storm” flooded the internet following the awards ceremony.

5. Uncle Luke honored

Hip Hop legend Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell was honored with the night’s I Am Hip Hop Icon Award. The founder of 2 Live Crew has been a strong presence in the world of hip hop music. He was honored with a tribute by other guests of the show and several hip hop artists joined Uncle Luke on stage to celebrate his honor.
