After the success of Riverdale, another property from the Archie Comics is jumping to the small screen. Although, it’s not actually the first time that we’ve seen her on television.
The CW is developing a one-hour drama show titled “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” which will serve as a spin-off/companion show for Riverdale. Obviously, as the title says, the show will center on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The project is said to be in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist. It will be a re-imagining of the origin story and adventures of Sabrina as “a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. This adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature – half-witch, half-mortal – while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”
Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will write the script with Lee Toland Krieger (who directed some episodes of Riverdale including the pilot) will direct if it goes forward to pilot order. They will executive produce alongside with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater. The potential show is eyed as a companion series for Riverdale for the 2018-2019 season.
There have been speculations about Sabrina appearing on the Riverdale universe since she is part of the Archie Comics property. As of now, it is still unknown if this companion series will be set on the same universe as Riverdale. Given this news, we can now speculate regarding Sabrina possibly appearing during the second season of Riverdale (maybe for a cameo) although it would be a huge shift for the show. This is not the first time that we’ve seen Sabrina the Teenage Witch on the small screen. Melissa Joan Hart starred in Sabrina the Teenage Witch that aired in ABC from 1996 to 2000 and in The WB from 2000 to 2003. An animated Sabrina the Teenage Witch show also aired during 1999 to 2000.
The second season of Riverdale is scheduled to premiere this October 11 on The CW. Are you excited about the new Sabrina the Teenage Witch TV show? Do you think that it will be part of the Riverdale universe? How will Archie and the gang react if they’ll cross path with Sabrina? You may comment your speculations below.
