ABC’s The Mayor Series Premiere Review

ABC’s The Mayor Series Premiere Review

ABC released the pilot episode of The Mayor early so that everyone has an opportunity to see it less than a month before its television premiere on October 3. The show is basically about a struggling rapper who decided to run for mayor in his city and hopefully increase the audience on his songs. Fortunately, his “successful campaign” led him to win the election and become the mayor. It is created by Jeremy Bronson (Speechless) and executive produced by Daveed Diggs (Hamilton). It stars newcomer Brandon Micheal Hall, Lea Michele (Glee), Bernard David Jones, Marcel Spiers, and Yvette Nicole Brown (Community).

The premise of the show is very promising and unique. I considered the story as one-of-a-kind. It’s like a what if situation of a struggling young rapper who decided to run for mayor as he is frustratingly finding an audience for his music. The result is The Mayor. The pilot was simply entertaining and funny. It was fast-paced but it has potential to be an audience favorite show. The characters were introduced and we get to see the story that the show will take on the next few episodes. The pilot episode is very vital on every TV show since you have to introduce everything in just a little amount of time (In this case, half hour) and the show was able to do it.

Brandon Micheal Hall is perfect as Courtney Rose. He’s a newcomer actor who is very promising based on his performance in the pilot alone. His character is very likable and a great captain to the ship of characters. I can’t wait to see more of him throughout the show’s run. Lea Michele as Valentina Barella wasn’t new to me. Her character is like Rachel Berry without a singing talent. Her performance is very familiar especially if you have seen her on Glee. Although, her character has potential and she is also very interesting. As early as now, I’m going to predict that Courtney and Valentina will have a romantic story arc in the future. Bernard David Jones and Marcel Spiers were also great supporting players to the show. I also love that Yvette Nicole Brown is playing Courtney’s mother. She was great as usual and I’m glad that she was able to find a good project after leaving Community (I know that she was on The Odd Couple).

I can assure to everyone that The Mayor is a very promising show that you will surely like. My only criticism for the pilot is that it is very fast-paced but it was still charming and funny. Next time, hopefully, they will be able to relax the pacing. I’m curious to see how the show will work after the pilot. We can expect Courtney having a fish-out-of-water experience as the mayor. The climax part of the pilot episode was about him being irresponsible and that will surely be a theme for his character throughout the run. The premise of the show might sound absurd but we’re now living in the world where Courtney’s situation is possible. The show could intentionally or unintentionally make fun of the current political climate.

The Mayor has a great start with its likable characters and unique premise. As I’ve said, I can’t wait to see the upcoming episodes and how the show will run. Also, I’m looking forward to see what David Spade’s character will do on the following episodes as I’ve heard that he will have a recurring role during the first season. The show will surely be an entertaining one. I think the show would work better on streaming sites or cable networks but ABC made it sure that the show can survive on them and find its audience. Anyways, I recommend everyone to watch the pilot episode of The Mayor online (or wait on television until October 3). You will surely love it thanks to the premise, characters and the jokes.

The series premiere of The Mayor is now available for streaming online at ABC.com. You may also watch its television premiere this coming October 3 on ABC.
