During the first season finale of Westworld, we were introduced to Samurai World (or at least its headquarters) during an action sequence between Hector, Maeve and Armistice and the security team of the park. Now, it appears that we might get a glimpse of it next season.
Deadline has reported that Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada joined the second season of the show for a recurring role. He is set to play a character named Musashi and there are no details released about the character for now. With this casting news, we can now speculate that we could see a glimpse of what Samurai World looks like next season. But, there is also a possibility that Musashi is not involved in Samurai World at all. He could be simply a Japanese visitor in the Westworld park or someone who works in Delos. For now, our money is on him as a host in Samurai World.
Fans have been speculating about Samurai World ever since the first season finale aired. A lot of them wished that they could see a glimpse of it during the second season. Based on what we’ve seen on the season finale, it appears that Samurai World could be as “fun” as Westworld (unless the hosts will go on retaliation). During the San Diego Comic-Con panel of the show back in July, co-creator Jonathan Nolan was asked about the possibility of Samurai World appearing during the second season. Sadly, his response was “Doesn’t look like anything to me.” Nolan might have responded that way to avoid spoilers or Samurai World will simply not appear.
The filming of the second season is currently underway and it is expected to last until December. Tallulah Riley and Louis Herthum were promoted to series regulars for the second season while Katja Herbers, Neil Jackson, Gustaf Skarsgard, Fares Fares, Betty Gabriel, and Jonathan Tucker joined the cast. The rest of the cast from the first season (whose characters survived) are expected to return.
Sanada has appeared on English-language movies like Rush Hour 3, Speed Racer, The Wolverine, and Mr. Holmes. He also did guest spots on television shows like Lost, Revenge, and The Last Ship and was a series regular during the first season of Extant. Westworld is currently nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the upcoming 69th Primetime Emmy Awards this Sunday including acting nominations for Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, and Thandie Newton as well as directing and writing nominations. The second season is expected to premiere on HBO early next year.
