Is anyone else just really tired of Lavar Ball? He’s been on so many different shows, Ellen included, attempting to push his BBB brand and talk up his son Lonzo in a way that’s just flat out embarrassing. This time when his son was presented with a particular gift from Ellen even Lavar Ball had to laugh, though one can easily imagine what he might have done if he got to take the painting home.
The painting in question has Ellen’s head superimposed upon the body of a pro ballplayer that is about dunk the ball over the reaching form of Lonzo Ball. It got a good laugh from Lonzo and Lavar, but chances are if they got to take it home it was probably put somewhere they didn’t have to look at it or was tossed not long after.
I’ll give Lavar credit that he’s trying to instill some discipline in his sons and get them to take a different tact than many ballplayers by getting them to create a brand rather than be endorsed by a brand. But other than this type of business acumen he sounds like a pompous nut most of the time. His one-liners are horrible, his attitude is borderline chauvinist, and you kind of have to wonder what his home life is like with the way he talks to people.
The boasting is another area that is just painful to listen to since Lavar has called out several players that he and his son could take so easily. Michael Jordan has even made the list, and this is perhaps one of the most laughable claims that he’s ever made. Lavar Ball was never one the same level as Jordan, and while Lonzo Ball is obviously a great player already he still has experience to gain to be the truly legendary player that his father is making him out to be. Every father wants to talk their children up, but those that understand the difference between being proud and setting the bar too high are those that will ultimately set their child up to fail the most.
When talking about failure both Lavar and Lonzo start looking at Ellen as though she’s somehow challenged their manhood. Lonzo seems to shut down just a bit and Lavar seems ready to defend his son, or himself since he seems to love talking about his ‘glory days’ when Ellen finally brings out the gift. Their reaction is about what you would expect on the more positive side of the spectrum. There’s amusement and laughter but it really sounds more like the type you would offer an inferior opponent that’s just told you that they’re going to mop the floor with you. It’s more mocking and derisive than anything, but it at least sounds genuine.
I get the fact that Lonzo is a big deal right now, but isn’t it possible to interview the guy without his father present all the time? Lavar is a glory hound that’s always on the scent it seems and doesn’t allow his son to go much of anywhere without him. It’s easy to assume that he’s invited, but not as easy to assume that talk show hosts really want him there.
