You’ve seen him a number of programs and films but the most enduring right now would have to be The Big Bang Theory. It seems that anyone that joins that cast is labeled as their character and everything they’ve done since seems to get kind of forgotten. That’s not a terrible thing really unless you figure that the show is the first time they’ve been on screen in their lives. For Simon Helberg it’s definitely a giant stepping stone or a feather in his cap, however you want to put it, but it’s not his first trip through Hollywood.
Here are a few roles you might have forgotten seeing him in.
5. Jerry – Old School
He doesn’t have a lot of speaking lines in this film as he’s kind of just the guy that sits in the background and waits for the stars of the movie to take note of him. With his distinctive looks though and personality that comes out every now and again it’s easy enough to remember his role in this movie once you finally watch it again.
4. Vernon – Van Wilder
Vernon is one of the poor, geeky guys in college that just couldn’t get a date if he paid a woman. Even if he did there’s a good chance he wouldn’t know what to say and would resort to doing the only thing he knew, which in this case is Ms. Pacman. Thankfully Van shows up to save the day and show the guys just what they’re missing by spending their time with a two dimensional woman when they could be going for the real thing.
3. Seth – Joey
It almost seems like he’s playing a cooler, more laid back version of Howard from The Big Bang Theory. He’s casual, he’s smart, and he talks so easily to the opposite sex and anyone else that he almost, ALMOST appears cool. He’s obviously highly competitive and can’t turn it off though once he really gets into it, and in truth he’s more like a severely macho version of a souped-up nerd that just can’t take losing to his friend.
2. Staffer – Evan Almighty
This is a minor role so it’s easily understandable if you missed him in this film. He doesn’t show up hardly at all and when he does it’s a kind of here and there moment. Simon has taken on a lot of roles like this it would seem and for the most part they’ve been added to his resume which is helpful when you’re looking to show what you’ve done but kind of difficult when you’re trying to show your actual accomplishments. Sometimes it seems as though actors take on cameo roles as a favor to others or just to get their name attached to something worthwhile. Unfortunately for this film it didn’t get rave reviews at the box office.
1. Dreidel L’ Chaim – Walk Hard
This is another film where he’s there and gone in a short time, but once again it’s something to add to his resume. You’ve got to figure that Simon Helberg didn’t get where he is today just by waiting for the big parts to come along. Like a lot of actors he’s paid his dues and appeared in a number of films and TV shows in order to get his name out there and become a known commodity.
Helberg isn’t the most known name or personality in TV or film history, but he has a very recognizable face and is still coming up as an actor. Expect to see him more and more as time goes on.
