My Favorite Five TV Moms in the History of Television

We all know how much of a stabilizing force a mother is in the lives of children. They often work full-time jobs, provide emotional support, and somehow find time to keep everyone fed and the home in order. The moms on this list bring the lives of these modern day super women to our TV screens every week. Let’s countdown the top 5 patriarchs on television, beginning with this animated mom who isn’t the centerpiece of her TV family, but is as important a character as any.

5. Marge Simpson

Let’s be honest for a second… The Simpsons have been one of our favorite TV families for over 20 years. But without Marge, that family would fall apart at the seams. Between Homer’s drinking and penchant for choking Bart and the kids would be in foster care and Homer sitting in rehab within a month of Marge’s absence.

4. Dr. Meredith Grey

Dr. Meredith Grey is a wife, a Doctor, and an often parental type force in the lives of her patients. Somehow she still finds the time, patience, and energy to be a good mother to her daughter Zola. But did we ever doubt this? Dr. Grey has overcome a lot in life, so we expected nothing less than the best when she and her husband adopted the orphaned little girl Malawi and later gave birth to a son. The definition of super mom in the dictionary should undoubtedly have her picture plastered next to it.

3. Rainbow Johnson

This soon to be mother of five is the backbone of the Johnson family on the ABC sitcom Black-ish. A loving wife, caretaker, and oh yea, she’s also a Doctor that has a wardrobe to die for?. Rainbow undoubtedly makes being a mother look stunning.

2. Clair Huxtable

Lawyer and mother of five Clair Huxtable is the epitamy of the classic TV mom. Her children are well behaved, she’s caring, attentive, humorous and never rattled when something unexpected happens. Clair is the backbone of the Huxtable family. The type of mother any woman would aspire to be like.

1. Carol Brady

Was there a doubt in anyone’s mind that this list would end with Carol Brady taking the number 1 spot? How could we not finish this countdown with the mother of all TV moms? She’s raising six children (the most of any matriarch on this list) in a blended family (which comes with its own unique difficulties) she takes care of her husband, started a real estate agency, and seems to do it all without breaking a sweat.

The way she seems to handle all the moving parts and personalities in her life with relative ease makes Carol Brady undoubtedly untoppable.

Conclusion

These TV moms optimize what it means to be a good mother. Although they have careers and many other things in their lives you always know that family comes first with them. Mother’s like these are what most of us desire to be when we become parents. I really enjoy seeing the women on this list week after week and hope to see more of them for many more years to come.
