Since reboots have become such a big part of our culture I’ve had to pick my battles when it comes to approving or disapproving of ideas that make it to television and movies. When reboots first started coming to light I got angry. The old school person in me would act like an old man sitting on a front porch saying things like “that’s not how they did in my day!” and I simply refused change. Then I grew up and realized maybe some reboots aren’t such a bad idea. It gives the new culture a chance to experience something I got to experience as a child but in a new way. And perhaps it would even encourage people to watch the originals.
I still fill that most reboots are unnecessary and that I prefer original work but from time to time I’ll happily admit when I think a reboot is a good idea. Case in point? Earlier today I remarked on how excited I was about a DuckTales reboot coming to Disney XD. How could you not be psyched about that? It’s not possible. But if there’s one reboot I’m about to spit all over it’s the new Dirty Dancing that will be starring Abigail Breslin and Colt Prattes.
This is where I draw the line. First of all I don’t think any movie with Patrick Swayze should ever be rebooted let alone one of the best roles he’s ever played. Honestly that’s the only reason a person needs to get angry at this. But to be honest I’m annoyed at everyone affiliated with this film for not feeling the same way as me. Plus another great actor, Jerry Orbach who played Baby’s dead is also no longer with us.
What’s even worse is that this is a three hour ABC original movie event? I just can’t. I can understand a Broadway play. That I can even get behind. But a made for TV movie? I just can’t guys. I really can’t. I think I’m actually kind of personally offended by this. Everyone on this film knows about the original. How could you do this? There’s still time to stop this. The movie doesn’t air until May.
