Will You Tune In to MTV’s Stranded with a Million Dollars?

MTV is trying to cash in on the reality game show genre with its premiere of “Stranded with a Million Dollars.” I just can’t see this working.  Then again, I’m not an MTV fanatic so what do I know?  Here’s the premise for what I call “Survival Reboot.”  10 contestants who are total strangers are left on an island with $ 1million.  Those cast members that manage to survive for 40 days get to keep the cash, but there’s a twist.  During their stay they have to buy supplies to keep alive and give themselves shelter.  And those supplies are ridiculously expensive.   For example, if you want a tent it’ll cost you $30,000.  Add to that the fact that each purchase has to be made by vote creates the exact kind of drama MTV loves.

While it’s obvious that the show is a knock off of Survivor does anyone else see another MTV theme here?  Remember this tag line? “7 strangers are picked to live in a house.  See what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.”  Tada!  The Real World!  Well, to be fair, every single reality show on MTV is in some way a spin off of the Real World.    But I mean come on.  Here’s the real tag line of “Stranded with a Million Dollars.”

“10 strangers are picked to live on an island together.  See what happens when they have $1 million to spend on simple household items that costs a fortune and they have to vote on the purchases.  Things may start off polite but they’ll start getting real!”

I think I’m gonna have to pass on this one.  MTV, stick with the college kids in real life but don’t toss them an on Island somewhere.
