The saying “what goes around comes around” couldn’t be more accurate on tonight’s episode of Sleepy Hollow. Malcolm Dreyfuss’s past catches up with him in the most shocking way possible. How’s that for karma?
We begin the hour with Ichabod giving a rather interesting speech. My first thought was that Ichabod is giving a history lesson, but it turned out to be pep talk with history thrown in for good measure. He told Molly’s soccer team about the origins of the sport (including some very grotesque details). The girls, fortunately, didn’t get nightmares from Ichabod’s words. Also, maybe Ichabod should consider coaching youth soccer in his spare time. Just a suggestion.
Agent Thomas now fully knows that her daughter Molly is a Witness, but doesn’t quite know how to break the news. Ichabod tells her that she will find the words someday because she is a great parent. I completely agree with Ichabod on this. I’m more than certain that Agent Thomas will do whatever it takes to make sure that Molly isn’t over-exposed to the whole fighting the supernatural thing. The Homeland agent then told her daughter the truth, which the latter took rather well. Who knew?
Now, let’s talk about Malcolm Dreyfuss, shall we? The man sold his soul to the Devil to get the life that he deserves. I wonder if Lucifer knows about this? The contract signing, in turn, sent his former partner Ansel, to a circle of Hell where he acquired some hardcore dark magic. That and the demons down there burned their names onto his body. Ansel managed to escape from Hell and killed Jobe with one of the sigil symbols on his arm. The man then tracked down Malcolm and killed everyone in the building. I guess that’s one way to exact vengeance on someone who took your life from you.
When it was revealed that Ansel wants to piece together the Philosopher’s Stone so that he can have eternal life, it made me think of Harry Potter. Are the writers of the show fans of the young boy wizard? I’m very curious. Back to the matter at hand, it seems that Malcolm wants the same thing that Ansel wants. He knows that he can’t exactly cheat his way out of death right? There’s no way that his little plan to achieve immortality is going to succeed. Loopholes do not last forever. It’s all going to come back and bite him in the butt at some point.
The scene where Jenny showed up and stopped Ansel from using another sigil spell, it confused me. How did she manage to get through the air ducts and toward the underground lair? There’s no context to show that. She just magically showed up to save the day. I’m not exactly dishing it out on the writers, but a little explanation here and there that would be nice.
I snickered when Jake asked Alex to help him get in Jenny’s good graces. Jenny has no interest in pursuing another romantic relationship, but I do give Jake an A for effort. Alex, of course, told Jenny the truth instead of flat out lying about it. I think these two ladies will become great friends as the season progresses.
As the episode came to an end, the team figured out that the strange map thing that Jobe took from the Smithsonian archives is a map of ley lines. Though they’re not common ley lines, they’re magical ley lines. The ley lines then form intersection points, which translates to the location of the Philosopher’s Stone pieces. The final piece is located in Sleepy Hollow. Time to go home, Ichabod!
