Even though this is the season 2 premiere of Code Black, the lead up to it has felt more like the launching of a new show. That’s because of some major casting changes that took out fan favorites Drs. Christa Lorenson Bonnie Somerville) and Neal Hudson (Raza Jaffrey. However, if you’ve never seen Code Black before, you can pretty much walk into season two and be fine. The pertinent stuff from season 1 – who are pals, who are anything but – will reveal itself.
The biggest new addition to the second season Code Black is Rob Lowe as Colonel Ethan Willis. He and Marcia Gay Harden (Dr. Leanne Rorish) serve as co-leads. Old fans and potential new ones can learn much about Lowe’s character from this trailer. Fans from season 1 though, be prepared for another shock!

No! Is Dr. Mike Leighton (Tom Dewey) off the show as well? Maybe not. He could just be in a coma…. Tom Dewey stars in the Hulu series Causal, so he wasn’t going to be available as a full-time character. Still, the relationship between Dr. Mike Leighton and his brother, Dr. Angus Leighton (Harry Ford) was one of the best things added in the latter half of season 1. Maybe he’s in a coma and will wake up in the latter half of season 2.
What We Can Expect From the Season 2 Premiere of Code Black?

Great Relationships
On the bright side the friendship between Angus and Dr. Malaya Pineda (Melanie Chandra) is still going strong. Their was some deep stuff that went down between those two – and it’s not romantic. Dr. Pineda is a lesbian. Of course, with all the other changes, it’s possible they have her discover that she’s bi. Hopefully not, but I wouldn’t rule it out.
Other good news is that Luis Guzmán is still around doing his thing as head nurse Jessie “Mama” Salander. He is Mama to Leanne’s Daddy, so it would be horrible if he weren’t there! Given everything going on, everyone’s gonna need Mama’s shoulder to cry on at some point in this premiere. Even the tough-as-nails Leanne.

Ugh! That’s Dr. Will Campbell (Boris Kodjoe). If you’re new to Code Black and thinking he’s a pompous *sshat in this clip, you’ve got his character down. This is the guy you’re going to love to hate.
However, what’s also highlighted in that clip is a part of Code Black I’ve always liked – the realness. Budget cuts and staffing issues are things that affect the state of health care in the U.S. every day. Doctors are often caught between doing their jobs and corporate decisions. It’s not pretty.
2. Intense Drama
The other kind of realness that the season 2 premiere of Code Black shows isn’t being cut back down on is the medical kind.

Like the scene above, the medical scenes on Code Black have always seemed very true-to-life. Many of the show’s fans are nurses, EMT’s and doctors and have commented on that fact. Clearly that won’t be going away!
Also from the above scene it looks like the emotional components are still intact. This is a show that has had a strong heart component to it. The personal issues have been dealt with honestly and well. Hopefully that will continue! Are you checking out the season 2 premiere of Code Black? It’s Wednesday at 10pm ET on CBS. (That’s today!)
