A lot of things went down in the season finale of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back in May and last Friday afternoon TVOvermind got to participate in the press junket for S.H.I.E.L.D. to get some information on what is going to in season 2.

To kick it off, we got to sit down and talk with two of the show-runners for the show, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen during roundtables as they teased what is in store in season 2.

TVOvermind’s Andy Behbakht: How do you see the new S.H.I.E.L.D. that you guys are forming with Director Coulson eventually affecting the movies in the later phases [of the Marvel Cinematic Universe]?

Jed Whedon: Our show is obviously very affected by the films so we can only hope to have that effect in reverse direction. But right now we get to sort of makeup what S.H.I.E.L.D. is for the first time on our show which is exciting.

Maurissa Tancharoen: Yeah, when we left last season, S.H.I.E.L.D. had completely fallen apart and it’s sort of up to us to define what the new S.H.I.E.L.D. is and struggle to rebuild it from scratch. It’s very nice because it makes our characters true underdogs and I think it will be a fun way to root for them right at the outset of the season

TVO: Aside from Cobie Smulders [who portrays Agent Maria Hill], what other familiar faces may we see in this season?

Whedon: They are all up for grabs!

Tancharoen: All of them, well I won’t say all of them are possible because they made it very clear for us that not all of them are possible. But some faces that are familiar will come into play. That’s all we can really say!

TVO: Any clues to who Skye’s dad might be, is it someone that we may have seen already?

Tancharoen: You will find out who Skye’s father is this season. Pretty soon I would say.

TVO: Is going to be how you revealed The Clairvoyant which was done slowly or is it going to be a fast pace?

Whedon: We have a lot of questions to answer that we left off at the end of last season.

Tancharoen: Skye’s father is definitely one of the things that we absolutely, obviously, teed up so we are not going to leave you hanging.

Lastly, but definitely not the least, we also talked to the other half of the show-runners staff, Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell as they talk about all the characters’ theme this season and how they can tell different stories, compared to its first season.

TVO: Last season you had to line up so much with the movies, but this year you have some more freedom, does it make it easier for you guys to make a season that is not too heavily dependent on what is coming with the movies?

Jeph Loeb: I don’t know if we were highly dependent on anything, we just told great stories and so we are going to tell more of those.

Jeffrey Bell: One of the things we couldn’t do was say the H-word, we knew we couldn’t say “Hydra” until episode 17 [the Captain America: The Winter Soldier tie-in episode]. That was the only sort of big secret that we were keeping and the turn of Grant Ward behind that. So the good news is that we have been completely blown apart, everybody hates S.H.I.E.L.D., that they think are Hydra, we have no power now. It provides a lot of opportunities for us to tell very different stories and put people in different combinations.

Loeb: We have a sort of wonderful opportunity to see Director Coulson now trying to figure out, “What is S.H.I.E.L.D.?” and really that’s the question for all of our characters this season which is “What will I become, now that everything has been set up, what will I become?”.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for its second season on Tuesday September 23, 9/8c (new timeslot!) on ABC.
