50 Industry Insiders Reveal What Really Happens Behind The Scenes At Companies People Trust

As consumers, we often only focus on the final product. But wouldn’t you like to know if the meal on your plate is actually fresh, or if the mechanic fixing your car is being completely honest?

The unsettling truth is that many industries operate on hidden tricks. For instance, some auto repair shops will easily convince a panicked driver to spend thousands on unnecessary car parts just to make a quick buck. Unfortunately, that is far from the only line of work keeping things under wraps.

When people online were recently asked to spill their professions’ secrets, their responses were seriously eye-opening. Someone revealed that many doctors use Google to diagnose tricky cases, while a radio jockey exposed how they handle live callers.

Scroll down to read some of the most startling insider truths — unless you’d prefer to keep living in blissful, expensive ignorance.

I’m a mechanic. 11 years ago I started my own company. The reason was simple; I can’t spend my day scamming people. The sad truth is that many shops have staff that will look into the eyes of a crying mother and convince her that she really needs to spend a few $k on unnecessary repairs, or her children will be in danger. You probably don’t need those control arms, you almost certainly don’t need new rotors (a resurfacing maybe) but everyday hundreds of people are sold these pricy services, with no regard for their financial wellbeing or the long term trust they’ll lose in the industry.

While we can’t verify every confession individually, we tried to uncover the truth behind the big guns.

Let’s begin with the restaurant industry. For instance, did you know that in the US, most restaurants are inspected only once or twice a year? High-risk establishments are checked every six months; others annually or even every two years.

That means for the other 363 days, what happens in the kitchen stays in the kitchen.

‘Caller Number 7 – you’re on the air’.

You’re actually not caller number 7. I answer the phones and say ‘KROQ, who’s this?’ and listen to the voice of the person on the other end, If you don’t have an enthusiastic, awake, and engaging voice; ‘you’re caller number 6. better luck next time.’

I’ll do this a few times until I hear a good voice. That person is caller number 7.

The marketing department needs to play this clip again to promote our contest, so good recordings make me look good.

The lack of regular oversight in the food industry creates serious real-world risks, and the numbers back that up. Official government data estimates that roughly 9.9 million foodborne illnesses strike the US every single year.

If you think kitchen workers in this list are even slightly exaggerating, take a quick look at this data: A 2025 survey of fast-food workers in California found that almost 47% saw at least one major health hazard at work in the past year alone.

We’re not talking about minor mistakes here. Workers reported dangerous cross-contamination, food sitting out at unsafe temperatures, active rat and mouse infestations, and even expired or spoiled food being served to unsuspecting customers.

To make matters worse, many of those same workers admitted they keep quiet because calling out these gross violations usually gets them punished or fired.

Social workers move mountains to help you fix your life and get your kids back…

…But if you messed it up badly enough to lose them once, nine times out of ten you’re going to mess up badly enough to lose them again.

My favorite example of this was the woman who worked for years, literally years, to get her kids back, did everything right, got them both back, and then – after all that – decided to sit down with her boyfriend and consider the pros and cons of going back to substance use and manufacturing. They even did a spreadsheet. In the end they decided that making, using, and selling it was a better use of their time than parenting. Their kids got adopted out.

From my experience as a social worker, I also know to never, ever, ever leave any child unattended with a youth pastor. Just to be safe you should probably avoid letting any child out of your sight with anyone affiliated in any way with any Southern Baptist church.

Life Insurance: that there is a database of every single medication you have taken your whole life. Every single Rx your doctors have written, even if you chose not to fill it, that can go against you in obtaining life insurance or increase your premiums. Trying to lie on an application will not work. We know every diagnosis and medication. Even doctors don’t know about this. I told my doctor at an appointment, DONT write that script and went on to explain why; he was shocked! Big brother is always watching.

Now, let’s look at an industry where the stakes couldn’t possibly be higher: healthcare. We rely on doctors and hospitals when we are at our most vulnerable, but behind the scenes, trust is rapidly crumbling.

A global study by the International Research Institutes found that most people across 23 countries feel their national healthcare system is in a full-blown crisis. Interestingly, most people don’t blame a lack of money — they blame terrible management.

Experts believe the gap between patient needs and physician capacity has widened in recent years.

“Appointments that once took days to schedule began stretching into weeks or even months, both in primary and specialty care. And when patients finally got through the door, visits felt hurried,” said Dr. Robert Pearl, a clinical professor of plastic surgery at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

“Delayed appointments allowed medical problems to worsen. Rushed exams led to misdiagnoses. And for patients left waiting, worrying, or returning with complications, the logical conclusion was that their doctors didn’t care,” he added.

Food and health aren’t the only industries operating behind a curtain of secrets. Across almost every major sector, companies routinely resort to dirty tricks and dubious workarounds just to keep their heads above water — or to line their pockets even further.

Take the auto repair industry, for example. Mechanics frequently face high revenue targets or commission-based pay structures. As a result, major consumer protection investigations have caught shops billing customers for unnecessary part replacements or charging for services never performed.

Even the fashion industry hides a big closet full of secrets. Big brands often rely on extreme worker exploitation overseas, selling cheap clothes built on human suffering and misleading claims of sustainability.

You’d think the shocking confessions on this thread would be common knowledge by now. But sadly, blowing the whistle on industry secrets is a massive risk — especially for people who still need their paychecks.

A survey by the Institute of Business Ethics exposes the sad reality of modern work culture. Nearly 23% of employees reported witnessing illegal or unethical behavior at work over the past year. Yet, out of those who witnessed wrongdoing, 33% chose to stay completely silent.

Why the silence? About 43% of workers feared speaking out would get them fired on the spot, while others felt management wouldn’t do anything about it anyway.

Even worse, for the brave 67% who found the courage to report the misconduct, about half faced direct retaliation or major career setbacks.

At the root of these secrets lies a simple mix of corporate greed and weak rules. Companies routinely rely on a massive knowledge gap, knowing everyday consumers simply lack the expertise to spot a scam or call out a lie.

But the tables are turning, and the internet is giving power back to the workers. Platforms like Reddit, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor give employees a platform — and crucial anonymity — to blow the whistle on hidden practices.

We all need to pay a bit more attention to this list, our neighborhood spots, and those giant brands. Because, at the end of the day, it’s our hard-earned cash funding their dirty little secrets.

indie game developer: how many games are full of bugs on release day that only get fixed after reports in the forums. a lot of indie game devs don’t even test their games and just release them in a broken state and fix them after release, since the first wave of players is like free testing. so for best results if you are going to play an indie game, don’t play it on release day, play it a week or two later after the first post-release patch. big companies don’t deal with this issue as much because they can afford to pay testers.

Currently a quality manager of a large industrial food plant…

You simply don’t want to know some of the things I know

However I will say this much — Most best-before dates are simply the latest reasonable date that the company verified their product can last to a lab. It’s cheaper to say”eh test it after 28 days and hopefully that’s enough” than to say “test it every day until it’s over the limits”. So you can probably rest easily on a lot of best-by dates, they aren’t nearly as concrete as many believe — although that’s all at your own risk

Education – we can see the future. The “quality” of employees coming to work with the rest of you in a few years time will be lower than you can possibly imagine. Blame any parent friends you have with middle school age children and above. Elementary and lower are on a better trajectory, so it’s not all doom and gloom, but things are gonna get a looooot worse before they get better.

Part-time teacher. Your kid handling being in a group ( organized, follow directions, control their temper, etc) is more important than teaching them early academics ABC’s and 123s.

When I talk to a parent about problems with their kid I’ve had them call them over and the kid recites academic info (listing Capital cities, how to spell her first and last name) but he’s so disruptive in class that no one learns anything. If your kid never has to sit still or zip their own coat at home their success in school is lower

This is common with anyone in my line of work.

I’m self employed. I own a pressure washing company (and do odd handyman jobs). How much I charge to clean your driveway or house or fence or whatever, is almost purely determined by how much money I think you have.

I’ve cleaned 600 sq ft driveways for people I think are living paycheck to paycheck or close to it for $150 and I’ve cleaned 600 sq ft driveways for people living in 6+ bedroom homes with $100k cars in the garage for $500+

Same goes for work I pickup. I’ll paint a bedroom for $300 to $800 depending on how much money I think you have.

I got a couple in regards to movie theaters:

People are gross. We constantly find toenail clippings, used diapers, bones from chicken wings people snuck in, saliva-crusted lollipop sticks, etc. stuck on seats and inside cupholders. I’ve also seen people stumble out, puke into the garbage cans, then go right back in. And we are not given enough time to do a proper deep-clean after every show due to studios forcing us to shove in as many screenings as possible and people insisting on showing up outlandishly early for their showtime.

Literally every single time someone has complained their popcorn is “stale”, it’s always popcorn that was freshly popped within the last 10 minutes. Every. Single. Time. It takes a few minutes for it to cool down, stop being spongey and gain that classic popcorn “snap.” In those cases, we usually will just give them the “emergency popcorn” that was made the night before that’s kept in the back. (We make it in case people wanted a refill after we closed.) And without fail, every single time they’ll take a bite of the day-old popcorn, smile and walk away, convinced they got the “fresh stuff.”

You’d genuinely be shocked and disgusted by just how many men in their 40s, 50s, 60s+ hit on the underage 15-17 year old female employees. You’d also be shocked at how many full-grown adults do things like intimidate and even threaten the workers (often the same teenage workers) over things like corporate policies that we have no control over, and how often we have to call the cops for it.
