The attack began shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday, when the 16-year-old suspect allegedly fired at a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck parked outside Silver Rail Elementary School.
According to details reported by local outlet The Source, the driver was sitting in the truck when he noticed the teenager approaching the school with a firearm.
The driver reportedly decided to confront him, but the teenager fired multiple shots at the man and his vehicle.

Photographs shared online reportedly showed damage along the passenger-side door and the truck bed, with the rear passenger-side window left shattered.
The teenager then allegedly threw his weapon over the school fence and climbed over after it.
The driver called emergency dispatchers at approximately 12:59 p.m., reporting that someone had fired at him while he was inside his vehicle.
Police subsequently received more calls reporting that an armed attacker had entered the school.
Authorities said the suspect forced his way inside the school building through locked doors.
Reportedly, as he entered the school, another community member who had witnessed his actions followed him inside and confronted him.

The bystander fatally sh*t the teenager before police officers reached the scene.
Bend Police Department Chief Mike Krantz explained the sequence of events during a public briefing.
“At 1:02 p.m., our first officers arrived on scene. Moments later, an officer reported that the suspect had been sh*t by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him,” he said.

Officers then entered the building, confirmed that the suspect was deceased, and searched the school to make sure there were no further threats.
As of this writing, investigators have not yet established why the teenager targeted the school or whether he had any connection to it.
The identity of the community member who confronted him has also not been publicly released.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the individual for intervening while acknowledging the emotional toll of the experience.

The tragedy prompted an outpouring of grief from local leaders, families, and residents.
Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steve Cook said the district struggled to find words for the scale of the tragedy and urged families to support their children as they processed what happened.

“Please hold your children, hold your loved ones tight tonight. Let them talk, let them cry. Let them know we are going to rally and care for one another in this community.”
