Not everyone can afford a hot tub inside their house. But that didn’t stop a man from fashioning one himself — using only an aluminum truck toolbox, a wheel drum, and a yoga mat.
He’s not the only one who took the phrase “necessity is the mother of invention” quite literally. An entire community of people takes broken, old, or useless items and turns them into surprisingly functional solutions.
They’re called the redneck engineers. Some of their DIY fixes are creative; some others are quite ridiculous. We’ve collected the most interesting ones from r/redneckengineering so that you can admire their genius… or laugh at the bizarreness of it all.

I added a Semi truck wheel drum for a fire basket, this lets me build a bigger fire and get the water to 104 within 1.5 hrs.
Also added a Yoga mat for insulation. Once the water reaches 104, i cover the fire with a pizza pan and no more heat enters the water. It keeps a steady temp and drops about 1 drgree every 15 minutes.
So a good 30 minute soak and I’m done. After about every 7 minutes i raise out of the water to cool off in the 60 degrees air.
Super comforting. I’ll figure out a filter system next.
I use Hydrogen peroxide to keep the water safe from bacteria.

The origins of the term redneck engineering are pretty fascinating.
It’s basically an informal slang phrase used to describe a makeshift, jury-rigged fix — something that might work surprisingly well, even if it looks far from professional.
The folk slang grew naturally from cultural stereotypes and everyday speech, which is why it doesn’t have one single, exact moment in history when it was born.
However, the foundation comes from the word “redneck,” which first surfaced in 19th-century America. It originally described poor, white rural workers in the Southern United States whose necks got sunburned from long hours working in the fields.
Early written uses of the word date back to the 1830s, often as a put-down used by wealthier people to describe these farm laborers.

Several other terms capture the same improvisational and makeshift vibe as redneck engineering. Each term has its own unique backstory.
For instance, jury-rigging means making a quick, temporary repair with whatever materials are on hand. This phrase traces back to sailors in the 1600s who had to rebuild broken ship masts mid-ocean. For example, tying a spare wooden spar to a shattered mast stump using leftover anchor rope.
Then there is MacGyvering, which means cleverly solving a problem using completely unrelated everyday items. The practice is named after the 1980s TV hero who escaped dangerous situations with household junk.
“The public are repairing or repurposing objects in an inventive way, which is fantastic and is a positive statement in an apparently disposable society,” says Danielle George, a professor at the University of Manchester.

While the other terms focus more on specific settings, redneck engineering is all about rough, over-the-top DIY fixes with a rural, scrappy vibe — often informal and humorous.

Redneck engineering is often about instant results. When a cabinet door sags or a lawnmower cord snaps, waiting days for a technician isn’t in the cards for some people, so they grab a wrench and solve the problem on the spot.
A huge sense of personal pride is involved, too. Few things feel quite as satisfying as showing off a newly built patio table or a patched-up fence and boasting in front of your guests.
There is a huge environmental upside, too. Every time someone patches up an old tool or repurposes scrap metal instead of throwing it away, they keep trash out of landfills and lower their carbon footprint right at home.
