New details have emerged in the case of Christina Marie Plante, who vanished from her home at 13 years old and was found this week, more than three decades later.
Plante disappeared from the small town of Star Valley, near Payson, Arizona, after setting off to see her horse at a stable near her home back on May 15, 1994.
At the time, the teen’s disappearance was described as “suspicious,” with authorities warning that she was “endangered.”

She was described as having blue eyes and dark blond hair, with authorities sharing that she vanished at approximately 12:30 hrs.
A flyer about Plante published in October 1994 in the newspaper The Morning Call described the case as an abduction by a stranger.
The girl was entered into national missing children databases and significant police resources were devoted to the search. However, despite efforts to locate her, the case eventually went cold.

In an announcement on Wednesday (April 1), the Gila County Sheriff’s Office said there had been a “successful resolution” to Plante’s case and that the woman, now 44 years old, had been found alive and well 32 years after she was reported missing.
Though the case had been investigated as an abduction, Capt. Jamie Garrett recently revealed she was “ dumbfounded” to learn that Plante left her home on purpose.
“I guess she wasn’t happy with where she was living and who she was living with and she ran away,” Garrett said on Thursday (April 2) while speaking on NewsNation’s Jesse Weber Live.

“I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh. Okay, so you ran away.’ I told her, ‘You know, we were under the impression that somebody k*dnapped you. It was deemed a criminal offense.’”
According to Garrett, who was the investigator who contacted Plante to confirm her identity, the 44-year-old said she escaped her home with the help of other family members.
“She said that was a long time ago, that was an old life,” Garrett shared.
“She’s in her adult life. She has her family now. That’s not something she even thinks about.”

Garrett explained that she zeroed in on an adult she suspected might be Plante and reached out to them by phone.
Plante reportedly offered few details about her life but said she had been living under a different name, using her married surname, for years.
The investigator added that she doesn’t believe there are any immediate family members currently in Star Valley who were searching for Plante.

Garrett and other investigators reportedly reached a breakthrough that helped locate the woman thanks to advances in technology and new investigative techniques.
“Investigators have confirmed her identity, and her status as a missing person has been officially resolved,” the Gila County Sheriff’s Office said.
Authorities highlighted the initiatives to investigate cold cases and their role in “bringing long-awaited answers to families and communities.”

The sheriff’s office previously said it would be honoring Plante’s desire to maintain her privacy and has not shared any details surrounding her disappearance as a young girl or where she was found.
“Out of respect for Christina’s privacy and well-being, additional details will not be released at this time,” the statement released on Wednesday read.
Authorities added that they remain “committed to pursuing all unresolved cases” and encouraged anyone with information regarding other cold cases to come forward.

Plante’s case comes after Alicia Navarro, an Arizona girl who was reported missing in 2019 at the age of 14, walked into a police station in Montana in 2023.
Before her disappearance, the teenager left a handwritten note apologizing for running away and promising she would return.

After Navarro identified herself, police arrested Edmund Davis, a man connected to her disappearance, and booked him on a slew of child ab*se charges after learning she was living with him, AZ Central reported.
In the United States, an estimated 460,000 children are reported missing every year, according to the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
